When WWII began, he was commander of the 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division, a unit he would train and lead on maneuvers and amphibious exercises in more than four states before leading them into battle on D-Day, June 6, 1944 — the Allied invasion of Europe.
On April 11, 1951, he was sent to Korea to command the 8th U.S. Army and U.N. forces, replacing Matthew B. Ridgeway, who himself was replacing Supreme Commander Douglas MacArthur.

After the armistice, KATUSA soldiers remained with 8th US Army units to receive training that was not readily available in the ROKA and to enhance 8th US Army's mission capability.

It has noted how bland and uninteresting  the lives of its men and women who were there for medical problems.  Other than the television, most patients literally stared out the window.  Recreation is virtually nill.  Magazines and newspapers were very limited as were the books in the "library".

To counter the immense technological advantage held by U.S. and allied forces during the Vietnam Conflict, the Viet Cong developed an extensive network of underground tunnel complexes.
The least effective was by mechanical means, as bulldozers and plows could not displace any but the shallowest of tunnels and only with great difficulty could they be deployed in densely vegetated and remote areas.
