8va   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
These semitones are usually equally spaced out in a method known as equal temperament.
The notation 8va is sometimes seen in sheet music, meaning "play this an octave higher than written." 8va stands for ottava, the Italian word for octave.
Sometimes 8va will also be used to indicate a passage is to be played an octave lower, although the similar notation 8vb (ottava bassa) is more common.

Leger line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The lines on the right would usually be considered too far off the staff and would be written in a different clef or with 8va notation.
A ledger line is a tool of musical notation to express notes that do not fall on the regular lines or spaces of the musical staff.
Notes on more than three or four ledger lines off the staff are usually considered too hard to read, and if there are several measures of them, it is usually preferred to switch clef or use 8va notation.

Lesson 3 for "Form & Analysis"
The reason: contrapuntal inversions at the 8va are easier to write--inverted dissonants stay dissonant and inverted consonants stay consonant.
Because analogous melodies start on the same pitches (albeit an 8va removed), this is an easy-to-recognize example of contrapuntal inversion at the octave.
But, unlike the preceding, where the high voice transposed down an 8va and the low voice up two 8vas, this example moves the high voice down a 4th (plus an octave) and the low voice up a 5th.

 Temperaments
An 8va is a ratio of 2:1, 4:2, 8:4, etc.; A 5th a ratio of 3:2, 6:4, etc.
Equal temperament, the theoretical foundations of which can be traced to early Greek and Chinese civilizations, has the 8va simply divided into 12 equal parts, each 1/2 step thus being 1.059463 times the preceding one's frequency.
Used for fretted instruments as early as the 15th century, it was set forth by theorists Zarilino (in 1588) and Mersenne (in 1636).

NWCForum - Is there a way to notate 8va and 8va bassa
I imagine the octave shift clefs are common in instruments that are notated in a clef but usually play in leger line land (piccolo, perhaps?), but I've never seen it on bass clarinet, tenor sax or bari sax parts, all of which are both transposed and octave shifted.
At the beginning of the passage, I'd insert 8va in italic text of some sort, then insert the x, y or z line from NWC Extra Ornaments.
Of course, if the 8va passage is many bars long, you'll want to use "loco" instead of a long line.

Octave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For other uses of the word octave, see Octave (disambiguation).
In music, an octave (sometimes abbreviated 8ve or 8va) is the interval between one musical note and another with half or double the frequency.
Similarly, 15ma means "play two octaves higher than written." Coll'ottava means to play the passage in octaves.

Re: [Finale] TAN: Extension ranges on ... Bass Clarinet
That said, with regular eyesight, reading up to 5 ledger lines for a pianist really shouldn't be an issue, but I'd agree that if the music stays in a register with several ledger lines, an 8va sign would probably be appropriate.
I don't think Dennis was referring to this, but I've played from scores where 8va signs were used in a register where none of the resultant notes went above the stave.
While I'm at it, mixing 8va and non 8va notes in rapid passages can be difficult to read, because there is a disjuncture between what you see, and what the hand has to stretch to.

Notes representing a pitch outside of the scope of the five line staff can be represented using leger lines, which provide a single note with additional lines and spaces.
Octave (8va) notation is used, particularly for keyboard music, where notes are substantially above or below the staff.
Multiple staves can be grouped together to form a staff system.

The end of the passage can also be indicated by the term loco ("at place") or perform at the written pitch.
More often one would see 8va bassa, 8a b, 8vb or simply 8 below the note or passage to indicate performing an octave lower.
First, it provides a shorthand for composers and copyists to keep from writing music with numerous ledger lines.

To make sure the cancellation of the octave sign is clear, the word "loco" ("at the written pitch") is often used after the "8va" or "8va bassa" passage, using the same type as the "8va" sign.
The "8va" sign is always placed above the staff, written above the first note it affects.
The "8va bassa" sign is always placed below the staff, written below the first note it affects.

This is the way any tabs you find of mine (mowgli) will look like but a few other people have started using it aswell Firstly whereabouts the note is on the keyboard is shown on the left hand side by this: 1st 8va
So a C on the middle line is middle C, A C on the 1st 8va line is an octave above middle C and on the -1st 8va line is an octave below.
This is different from quite a few other tabbers who put the sharp after the note but I did it the other way round as the sharp would come before in sheet music.

MusEdit Tip 30: How To Draw Octave Notation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The fact the music is to be played an octave higher than it is written is usually indicated by the letters "8va" followed by a dashed line to show the range of notes affected by the octave shift (see attached image).
To finely tune the horizontal position of the phrase use leading spaces as needed, such as " 8va".
This simplifies the 8va shift notation a bit because it keeps it all within a single extended object rather than requiring two objects.

I am learning the prelude (it doesn't seem to be very difficult at all), but the 8va (octave) signs seem REALLY strangely placed.
the beginning 8va marks are just there to tell you where to start playing octave higher and the 8va marks at the end of the song tells you when to stop.
if you look at the 8va mark in the first measure carefully you'll noticed that they didn't have a 8va stop mark meaning they want you to continue.
