Anno Domini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is due to the prevalence of Christianity in the Western world, the great influence of the Western world on science, technology and commerce, as well as the fact that the solar Gregorian calendar has, for a long time, been considered to be astronomically correct.
In India, the traditional Saka era, using an epoch of 78 A.D. is the official calendar.
Historians do not use a year zero — AD 1 is the first year or epoch of the Anno Domini era, and 1 BC immediately precedes it as the first year before the epoch.

Bush ad's 9/11 theme draws fire from Dems | The San Diego Union-Tribune
In the ad, Bush recalls the imagery of the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in explaining his belief that the nation must be proactive in confronting threats.
The ad does not directly mention the war in Iraq – and, unlike many of Bush's previous ads, it doesn't mention Democratic candidate Sen. John Kerry – though the reference to 9/11 drew criticism from Democrats.
The ad claims that Kerry fought to establish a Homeland Security department, while "Bush opposed it for almost a year after 9/11." Republicans argued that Democrats were the ones who stalled the department's creation because of pressure from unions, and that it was Kerry who skipped the vote to fund it last year.
