  Porsche 944 - Wikicars
The Porsche 944 was Porsche's largest-selling front-engined coupe.
The 944 is quite rightly termed as the saviour of Porsche - the massive cash reserves that this model made during the 1980s kept the company afloat (just) during the world recession of the early 1990s.
The 944 range reached its climax in the summer of 1990, with the introduction of the faintly ludicrous 944 Turbo Cabriolet, using the 250BHP power plant mated to the drop-dead gorgeous Cabriolet bodyshell.

The 944 was a huge success for Porsche throughout the 1980s, and was available in several forms throughout its evolution: 944, 944S, 944 Turbo, and the 944S2.
The 944 was introduced in 1983 with a 2.5 L straight-4 engine that's design was based on one half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine.
In 1986 Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, a higher-performance variant, known internally as the 951.

The Porsche 944 was first unveiled to the general public in 1981 in the Frankfurt Auto Show but actual production and sales of the car started only for the 1983 model year.
The first actual redesign made to the 944 was given mid-year of 1985, whence it was given a new interior and a few bodywork changes like improved rear suspension and new control arms.
Porsche was supposed to introduce a car called the Porsche 944 S3 after the 1991 model year, but the company eventually opted to call the new car as the Porsche 968 because of the substantial difference it has over the 944.

Volvospeed Forums > Porsche 944 Turbo Or MR2 Turbo?
May 5 2004, 05:08 PM The 944 does not have reliablility issues and the ones you hear of with "problems" are poorly treated and usually not maintaned.
I am not sure of MR2, but the 944 turbo had two types of brakes - the ones on the 86-88 Turbo (same as the ones on the S2) and the ones on teh 88-89 Turbo S. As can be expected, the brakes on the Turbo S are larger.
If you are going to mod the engine, a 944 Turbo (220 hp stock) is as easy to upgrade as a 944 Turbo S (250 hp stock) - but you miss out on the bigger brakes and possibly the LSD rear end.

The 944 was an overhauled version of the 924 and was everything the 924 wasn't right from the start.
One of the reasons the 944 was ever designed was that the 924's credentials as a 'real' Porsche were doubted, even the 924 couldn't shake off the VW stamp for the peoples heads.
The cosmetic changes in the 944 weren't all in all that dramaticl, the biggest change being the addition of side flares and a rear spoiler.
