Topic: 949 Granit

Oscar class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Soviet Union’s Project 949 (Granit) and Project 949A (Antey) submarines are known in the West by their NATO reporting names: the Oscar-I and Oscar-II classes respectively.
Oscars are the largest attack subs in service as of 2006, being slightly larger than Ohio-class submarines of the United States Navy, displacing less when surfaced but more when submerged, as they are shorter in length but broader in beam.
Strategic armament: 24 Granit SS-N-19 missiles in two banks of 12 tubes mounted outside the pressure hull.

Granit is one of the most sophisticated antiship missiles in its class.
Let's suppose that after launch, Granit was presented with such a choice: a stationary simulated target such as an old rusty barge or a moving surfaced submarine.
Thus, the first "explosion" registered by the Norwegians might have been caused by the impact of the Granit (or by its launch, which is also an extremely violent event), while the second powerful explosion might have been the detonation of the NATO torpedo, when it hit Kursk.

The Kursk, a 150-metre-long (490-feet) anti-aircraft-carrier attack vessel capable of launching up to 24 cruise missiles at a time, was one of several 949 series submarines which form the backbone of Russia's anti-aircraft-carrier force.
The 949 series submarines, Oscar-II by NATO classification, are designed to tail carriers, keeping them within missile range to destroy if ordered.
The vessels carry 24 SS-N-19 Granit nuclear-capable supersonic cruise missiles, to be launched in salvos of between one and 24 at a time.

The findings coincide with a Pentagon report yesterday that American submarines monitoring the exercises in which the Kursk was taking part on Aug 12 recorded two explosions, a small one and a second blast equivalent to the force of up to five tons of TNT.
The German newspaper Berliner Zeitung said the inquiry by the FSB, the domestic arm of the former KGB, believed that the Kursk was hit by a new Granit missile fired from the nuclear-powered cruiser Peter the Great.
The weapon, armed with a target-seeking head, flew 12 miles before diving into the sea near the Kursk.
