It was the sixth regiment to bear this number in the British Army.
However at the battle of Inkerman (fought in fog), the Russians 30,000 strong attacked and found the 95th as one of the regiments on outpost duty, fighting stubbornly in small parties to hold on until the repeated British bayonet charges caused the Russians to withdraw.
The Regiment was diverted to Bombay where it joined the Central Indian Field Force, whose achievements in marching and fighting through jungle and over arid plains under tropical skies still stand as a marvel of military achievement and endurance.

It was one of the regiments that won undying fame in storming and capturing from the French the Naval Arsenal of Louisburg, a stronghold that had been heavily and extensively fortifed.
The Regiment was despatched to South america in 1807 where it took part in the attack on Buenos Aires, when every man of the small British Force had to fight for his life in the street-fighting that followed the capture of the town.

Regiment was formed in Australia in1996 — but followed the formation of a unit in the UK.
I first encountered the 95th in the UK in 1993 by accident — and a discussion with members revealed that getting the right equipment was difficult in the UK and was undoubtedly going to be impossible back in Australia.
Regiment at its versatile best - elements were involved in long approach marches, skirmishing, stubborn defence and assault in conventional infantry formations.

In 1751 (by which time the Regiment had changed its name eight times under successive Colonels) the system changed and all Regiments were given numbers based upon the date of their formation and the Regiment assumed the the title 29th Foot.
For its share in the engagement, the Regiment was awarded the Naval Crown to be borne with its Battle Honours.
However, in 1811 the Regiment returned to the Peninsula and there remained under The Duke of Wellington's command until the fall of Toulouse in 1814, amassing ten Battle Honours during the course of the campaign.

Plunkett, armed with a Baker rifle, shot the French General Colbert at a range of between 400 and 800 yards during the Peninsula War.
Its number was taken by the 96th Foot, which was disbanded in 1818.
In 1958 it was renamed the 3rd Green Jackets Regiment of the Green Jackets Brigade.

When the recruit is habituated to the lengths and directions of the step, he must be made to continue the march, without pausing, with firmness, and in the cadence of the ordinary pace, vis, 74 steps in one minute.
As all marching (the side step excepted) inevitable begins with the left foot, whether the obliquing commences from the halt, or on the march, the first diagonal step is taken by the leading foot of the side inclined to, when it comes to its turn, after the command is pronounced.
To change the feet in marching, the advanced foot completes its pace, the ball of the other foot is brought op quickly to the heel of the advanced one, which instantly makes another step forward, so that the cadence may not be lost.

One accent of the regiment was to have the rifleman working in open order and be able to think for themselves, a method completely unheard of prior to its formation.

In 1805 a 2nd Battalion was raised at Canterbury, Kent and later in the year the 1st/95th deployed to Germany as part of a British expedition, under the command of Lord Cathcart, designed to liberate Hannover from occupation by France, with the 95th subsequently forming the advanced guard on the way to Bremen.
On the 17th August the 95th, as part of 6th Brigade which included the 5th/60th Foot, took part in the Battle of Rolica, the first pitched battle of the war, which saw the 95th distinguish themselves greatly.
Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the 95th was renamed The Rifle Brigade, as a means of distinguishing them from the ordinary line infantry.

Perhaps the most famous was formed in 1800 as an "experimental Corps of Riflemen" who armed with the Baker rifle, would act as skirmishers against the French during the Napoleonic Wars.
They were to operate in pairs and make best use of natural cover from which to harass the enemy with accurately aimed shots as opposed to releasing a mass volley, which was the orthodox of the day.
