It has a dark-colored surface and probably a primitive carbonaceous composition.
Three times has Aegle been observed occulting a star.

Note: The duration given in the line below is the interval during which the occultation shadow sweeps across the Earth - please see the minute markers on the map to determine the approximate time for your location.
On 2006 Mar 29 UT, the 170 km diameter asteroid (96) Aegle will occult a 10.9 mag star in the constellation Auriga for observers along a wide path across north-eastern Northern Territory and central Queensland.

In the night of August 3/4, 2003 a faint 10.1 mag star TYC 6911-01232-1 = SAO 189366 will be occulted by a 174 km asteroid (96) Aegle.
Close finding chart (prepared in GUIDE8): * occulted star is in center - labeled with cross * field is 3.0x3.0 degrees * limiting magnitude is 13.0 * labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers * remarks: Second chart shows 30' blowup to show correctly the star in field.

In the morning of night of October 3/4, 2005 a faint 12.1 mag star UCAC2 46117426 = GSC 2918-01572 will be occulted by a 174 km asteroid (96) Aegle.
This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid and UCAC2 star position.

Occultation of TYC 7299-00684-1 by (96) Aegle - 2002 February 18:
Apart from a cloud foiled attempt from Wellington, no other reports have been recieved.
As of 22 January 2002, no previous occultations involving (96) Aegle have been reported.
