		A new mouse mutant, termed klotho, was discovered that exhibits a syndrome resembling human aging, including a reduced life span, decreased activity, infertility, osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis, atrophy of the skin, etc. All these phenotypes were caused by the disruption of a single gene, klotho (Figs.
		The klotho gene encodes a novel protein that appears to function outside of the cells (secreted protein), and thus it is very different from that involved in previously described prematureaging syndromes and cell senescence, which function in the nucleus.
		The klotho mutant mouse, the first laboratory animal model established, is expected to bring new insights into human aging mechanisms and also to validate the novel concept that a humoral factor(s) can regulate aging.

		Japanese scientists were the first to learn that variations in klotho, named after the Greek Fate purported to spin the thread of life, made mice age quickly and similarly to humans, developing conditions like atherosclerosis and osteoporosis that are practically unheard of in the furry critters.
		The scientists determined which klotho variants each participant had and linked that to the person's clinical diagnosis and risk factors, which had been gathered as part of the older studies.
		The klotho gene carries the blueprint for a protein that seems related to enzymes known as beta-glycosidases, but no specific target for the klotho protein has been identified.

		On 2004 Aug 04 UT, the 82 km diameter asteroid (97) Klotho will occult a 12.7 mag star in the constellation Libra for observers along a path across Australia, New Zealand.
		In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 1.4 mag to 13.7 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 6.8 seconds.

		About midnight last night, I was out chasing asteroids with my 12.5" Newt/Dob.
		Among my targets for the night were (from SW to SE) 39 Laetitia, 41 Daphne, 97 Klotho, 37 Fides, 11 Parthenope, 89 Julia, 19 Fortuna, 313 Chaldaea and 78 Diana.
		I had 24 Themis on my list, but never made it that far.
