In the second millenium bce, in the Rig-Veda it was maintained the Earth was a globe and in the Yajur-Veda that the Earth circled the Sun.
About 510 bce, Almaeon of Crotona, a member of the Pythagorean medical circle, located the seat of perception in the brain, or enkephalos, and maintained that there were passages connecting the senses to the brain, a position he was said to have arrived at by dissections of the optic nerve.
By about 335 bce, Aristotle had said that universals are abstractions from particulars and that we "have knowledge of a scientific fact when we can prove that it could not be otherwise." But "since observation never shows whether this is the case," he established "reason rather observation at the center of scientific effort" (Park 1990:32).

Marius’ sixth consulship in 100 BCE appears to have stemmed from a universal desire to acknowledge what was owed to Marius for his courage and skill in organisation [1].
The tribune, Saturninus, brought forward some bills, including one to provide allotments for the veterans on land in southern France which the natives were deemed to have forfeited by not defending it against the Cimbri and another to authorise the foundation of colonies in Sicily, Achaea and Macedonia.
On another front in 88 BCE, the Italians were finally enfranchised as a result of the Social War [22].

This last refuge of stratigraphic control will allow us to gain a better understanding of the Chicago stratigraphy in Area AA and is one of the principal aims of excavation this 1998 season.
In Area H we plan to remove City Wall 325 and the buildings of Stratum IVA of the 8th century BCE and penetrate into VA-IVB, which is one of the currently hotly disputed, and fundamentally important, strata in biblical archaeology (see chronology debate).

The monumental remains of Level J-4 – the three parallel walls and the contents of the corridors between them – are unique in the Levant.
We now know that the building itself was on the northern side of the large parallel walls (which together with the corridors between them apparently served as temenos walls to the cult compound).
We assume that the altar of this stratum was approximately in the same area as the later altar, from the third millennium BCE.

Written in the second half of the second century BCE, the first book of Maccabees is a detailed account of the history of Judah from the accession of Antiochus IV in 175 B.C.E. to the death of Simon in 134 B.C.E. Thus the book describes the history of the Maccabean revolt.
Nebuchadnezzar (604-652 BCE) was a Babylonian monarch whose residence was not Nineveh, the Assyrian capitol, which had been destroyed by the Babylonians in 612 BCE.
Nebuchadnezzar had campaigned in Syro-Palestine late in the seventh century B.C.E. It is possible that the figures of Holofernes and his colleague Bagoas are memories of Orophernes and Bagoas who were generals in the campaign of the Persian king Artaxerxes III Orchus (359-338) against Phoenicia and Egypt.
