The.45 WinMag was a lengthened.45 ACP and the 9MM Magnum, naturally, was a 9MM Parabellum stretched four-tenths of an inch.
I assumed that muzzle velocities would be somewhere in between the 9MM Parabellum and the.357 Magnum with comparable weight bullets and that is exactly where the 9MM Magnum falls.
The IAI 9MM Magnum is not so bulky that it could not be made into a four- or five-inch barreled carry gun, but the since it is neither a double action pistol, nor can it be carried cocked-and-locked, it is unlikely to be pressed into service as a defensive gun.

9mm Cartridges of the World: Past and Present - Message Board - ezboard.com
Like.38 Special, 9mm Parabellum is often criticized as “underpowered.” However, full sized 9mm Parabellum semi-autos are capable of carrying a large number of rounds, have low felt recoil, and offer a decent compromise between power and ease of shooting.
Older pistols are usually marked "9mm Parabellum," “9mm PARA,” or even “9mm/08.” Since Georg Luger actually named the cartridge “9mm Parabellum” and the Latin phrase was readily identified, European pistols and ammunition were generally marked as such, or “9mm PARA” as an abbreviation.
The cartridge differed from 9mm Parabellum only in power, and the bullet diameter was 9.03mm (.355”), which is the same as 9x17mm, 9x19mm, 9x21, and the various 9x23mm cartridges.

The general consensus seems to be that the.38 Super is a more potent round than the 9x19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum,, or whatever moniker is being used for our current military pistol round.
Another factor to consider is that 9mm and 9x18mm Makarov are probably the least expensive centerfire handgun rounds to be found.
At this time, I see the 9mm as not giving up enough to be significant for the fellow wanting to buy a pistol for protection and he'll certainly have more selection.

During trials to adopt a new pistol for the German army, the Germans were very impressed by Georg Luger's toggle-locked design, which the Swiss had already adopted just after the turn of the century.
This thus became 9mm Parabellum, and the only major modification necessary to the pistol was a different barrel - all the magazines etc. were unaltered.

Based upon his earlier 7.65 mm Parabellum pistol cartridge, Georg Luger designed the 9 mm Luger cartridge at the German company Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken, and presented a 9 mm version of his Luger pistol to the British Small Arms Committee in 1902 via Vickers.
The 9 mm Parabellum cartridge has been manufactured by, or for, more than 70 different countries and, today, has become the world’s standard pistol cartridge, being the standard pistol caliber for NATO and the militaries of most countries of the world.
