Widely known as the "Luger" or "Parabellum", the semiautomatic, recoil-operated Pistole P-08 was based on an 1893 design by American Hugo Borchardt.
The P-08 Luger fires the 9mm Luger/Parabellum (9x19mm) round, one of the world's most popular cartridges for pistol and submachine gun use, including the U.S. military M9 Beretta 9mm Pistol.
Luger and P-38 pistols are often confused with one another, as both were developed and manufactured to be used by the German army during WW I and WW II.

 Handguns: The P.08 German Luger
Georg Luger and Hugo Borchardt were friends and colleagues at the Lowe firm and both had a serious interest and no small measure of success with self-loading firearm designs and patents as well as ammunition.
The Luger is a locked breech, magazine fed, semi-automatic pistol that use the same unique toggle action to lock the breech momentarily during firing.
Characteristics of the Luger are its clean flowing lines that include a tapered barrel of various lengths and a grip that houses the magazine that is angled acutely to barrel centerline.

The 9mm Parabellum also goes by the names 9mm Luger and 9x19mm, and is distinct from a number of other cartridges that use the designation "9mm" in their names (such as 9mm short, 9mm Makarov, 9mm largo).
The so-called "new model" Luger of 1904 in caliber 9mm Parabellum was accepted by the German navy and later the army and designated the P08.
The spent cartridge is extracted by a combination extractor/loaded chamber indicator on the top of the toggle, is ejected as the toggle nears the end of its rearward travel, and a new round is stripped from the magazine and chambered as the toggle is driven back to the straight position by a spring.

The Luger was defeated in trials by the Colt-Browning that became the model 1911.
Lugers continued to be used as police side arms in the German Democratic Republic, which refurbished a number of existing guns.
The most distinctive feature of the Luger is undoubtedly the toggle-lock mechanism, which holds the breech closed by locking in a manner not unlike the human knee, which can sustain a heavy weight when straight, but once bent, is quite easy to continue to bend.

The improved C/93 pistol was chambered in 7.65 Luger (aka.30 Luger or 7.65x21mm), which allowed for a slightly shorter action length and the new grip angle.
Luger named his newest cartridge “Parabellum” in reference to the Latin motto "Si vis paceum, parabellum." Translated into English, this means “those who wish for peace, prepare for war.” By using the Latin coinage, Luger accomplished two goals.
Although the Glisenti pistol resembled the P.08 Luger, its lock-up was obtained via a pivoting wedge that engaged a recess underneath the barrel.

Design features of machine guns were applied to automatic handguns, "machine pistols", such as the Luger (although these did not yet have full automatic fire).
In police, special operations, and other paramilitary roles, smaller automatic weapons, including light submachine guns and machine pistols, proliferated, many relying on the increasingly ubiquitous 9x19mm round.
The development of conventional machine guns has been slowed by the fact that existing designs of machine guns are adequate for most purposes, although significant developments are taking place with regard to anti-armour and anti-missile weapons.

The number of fine little guns chambered for the load are an undeniable argument in its favor, but recent developments in compact 9x19mm (Luger) pistols hopelessly obsolete the.380.
The origins of the 9mm Luger round may be a trifle obscure, but its place in today's lineup of cartridges is crystal clear.
I believe the 9mm's greatest virtue is size--small enough to fit into a double-column, high capacity magazine but, with enough case capacity to drive light (90 grains or so) bullets to 1,400 fps and heavy ones (147-grain subsonics) as fast as 1,000 fps.
