A-7 Corsair II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A-7 Corsair II The Ling-Temco-Vought A-7 Corsair II was a light attack aircraft based on the F-8 Crusader.
The A-7 Corsair II was tagged with the nickname "SLUFF" (Short, Little, Ugly Fat Fucker) by pilots, a nickname also shared by the A-10 "Warthog".
The A-7 was based on the earlier F-8 Crusader, but had a broader, shorter fuselage with a wing of increased span and area.

The Corsair was a major player in air races for several years, until serious accidents led to the effective suspension of air racing in the early 1950s.
At its peak, the Corsair equipped 19 FAA squadrons.
Although by this time the Corsair was outmatched in air combat by the new jet fighters, it was still an excellent attack aircraft, and so Vought designed an optimized close-support variant of the Corsair, originally to be designated the "F4U-6" but going into service as the "AU-1", with the "A" emphasizing its attack role.

 A-7 Corsair II
A-7 Corsair II The A-7 is a modern, sophisticated, integrated, highly versatile airborne weapon system capable of performing a variety of search, surveillance and attack missions.
Since the A-7 is a subsonic aircraft, however, no area ruling is incorporated in the fuselage, which is also shorter and deeper than that of the supersonic F-8.
The shorter length of the fuselage together with the slight "upsweep" of the underside of the afterbody allow the A-7 to be rotated to a significantly higher pitch angle on takeoff and landing, without tail scrape, than was possible for the F-8.
