 Better Luck Tomorrow
Better Luck Tomorrow is one of the better movies that I've seen recently.
In fact, although I went to high school in the 1960s and my family is Northern European, I related to this film better than I have to any high school film in my memory.
Any film rated C- or better is recommended for fans of that type of film.

 A Better Tomorrow (1986)
A Better Tomorrow is the film that started it all, full of John Woo’s now-classic trademarks of jaw-dropping style, heart-stopping action and gunfire mayhem that must be seen to be believed.
ABT definitely establishes the Woo trademarks of stylish, graphic violence but it never sacrifices character for theatrics.
Although ABT uses the original Cantonese dialogue, speech often seemed poorly-integrated with the action; the result is a film that came across as a weakly-dubbed affair much of the time.

A Better Tomorrow DVD review on AudioRevolution.com
This dazzling, sentimental and handsome crime thriller from Hong Kong is the movie that at once started and established John Woo's reputation as one of the greatest of all action-film directors.
Not only did 'A Better Tomorrow' establish John Woo as a major director -- the film was a huge hit everywhere it was released (which didn't include the U.S., really) -- but it abruptly shifted the direction of Chow Yun-Fat's career.
The real leads of 'A Better Tomorrow' are Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung; both are very good, but it's Yun-Fat who steals the picture without even trying to.

 A Better Tomorrow (1986)
A Better Tomorrow is a little gangster film that became nothing less than a phenomenon—a multiple award winning, box-office smashing tour-de-force from John Woo that single-handedly changed Hong Kong cinema forever.
In A Better Tomorrow, we encounter characters motivated not by cynicism and self-interest, but by love and mutual respect—a prototype of sorts for future films in the "heroic bloodshed" genre.
Devoid of much of the overdone "Woo-isms" that populate the director's later films (and have actually become groan-inducing clichés), A Better Tomorrow is a polished, resonant piece of HK filmmaking and an absolute genre essential.

 A Better Tomorrow
Then a couple of year latter came A BETTER TOMORROW, which began by showing two highly successful, confident and jolly professionals (that their activity was illegal did not seem to matter much), who through tragic circumstances quite beyond their control lose almost everything: money, status, employment and even family.
A BETTER TOMORROW’s tremendous success also very much benefited producer Tsui Hark and his Film Workshop and led to the formation of a new sub-genre the Heroic tragic Gangster flick also later dubbed “Heroic Bloodshed”.
A BETTER TOMORROW has become a widely available classic and is appreciated as the great beginning of a master action filmmaker, although some complain that with it’s music and eighties looks it shows some sign of cinematic ageing.

"A Better Tomorrow" is the movie that created the image of Chow Yun-Fat as a suave, gun-wielding man with strong emotional ties that give his characters sensibility and sensitivity despite the fact that he commits utterly violent acts.
Supported by a cast of equally skilled and known actors, "A Better Tomorrow" is a furious thrill ride that offers an unparalleled barrage for the senses.
Given the fact that "A Better Tomorrow" comes with some very problematic images built-in, this DVD offers a spectacular rendition of the movie, even more so for a Hong Kong movie.

Partly a straightforward follow-up and partly a tongue-in-cheek parody, A Better Tomorrow II contains most of the celebrated Woo-isms that fans have come to love: heroic bloodshed, two-pistols-a-pumpin' action, and a little Christian symbolism to boot.
A Better Tomorrow II has its moments (Chow Yun-Fat mocking his Mark persona for one, the ridiculously intense "Eat the rice!" scene is another), but overall the film is pretty stale when compared to Woo's other signature films.
But, while Hard Boiled and The Killer might be better flicks, neither can match the pure aesthetic coolness of A Better Tomorrow II's exhilarating guns-a-blazin' finale.

It has the virtue of Lin's tangy wit but it also suffers from the vice of a director who, torn between personal vision and wide public reach, tends to smother his ideas under a veneer of cool.
