The Bridge So Far - a Suspense Story
For a filmmaker whose documentaries frequently extol grass-roots democracy, the realization that too much civic involvement is possible came as a surprise to David L. Brown.
A Brisbane resident, he figures it was too much input from too many voices, coupled with political meddling that is primarily to blame for the 16-year delay in reconstructing the country's second busiest bridge.
In “The Bridge So Far: A Suspense Story,” scheduled to air this Sunday, Brown humorously depicts the political backbiting, engineering miscues, and marathon public debates with cartoons (a la Michael Moore) along with commentary from the likes of satirist Will Durst.

'''''A Bridge Too Far''''' is a book by Cornelius Ryan, published in 1974, which tells the story of Operation Market Garden, a failed Allied attempt to force a break in German lines at Arnhem in the occupied Netherlands during World War II.

 A Bridge Too Far, Again?
Their goal: to secure bridges across the rivers in Holland so that the Allied army could advance rapidly northwards and turn left into the lowlands of Germany…If all carried out as planned, it should have ended the war by Christmas 1944.
The idea was to capture several bridges in short succession, leading to the final bridge over the Rhine River at Arnhem, allowing the British army to skirt around the Siegfried line, the German defence line, much as the Germans had done earlier in 1940 against the supposedly inpregnable French Maginot Line.
Thus if the last bridge was not reached soon enough by the advancing tanks to relieve the small number of parachute commandoes fighting for their existence around the bridge at Arnhem, then the entire line of advance might basically fail, back to near the pointing start in Belgium.

DVD REVIEW: A BRIDGE TOO FAR
Arnhem had the unfortunate luck to be a stone's throw away from Germany, with only a river and a bridge separating them.
That bridge plays an important role in "A Bridge Too Far," a failed attempt at a good, old-fashioned war movie.
Shot on a larger-than-life canvas by Richard Attenborough, "A Bridge Too Far" reminded me of those great early 1960's war movies like "The Longest Day" and "The Great Escape." Good scripts, lots of star power, and a butt-numbing running time.
