A CHEF IN LOVE movie review with photos
For this Oscar-nominated film, Pascal, a French chef of the 1920s, follows his love to her home in the Eastern European republic of Georgia and opens a grand restaurant in the Parisian style.
A Chef in Love was created by director Nana Djordjadze and her screenwriting husband, Iraki Kvirikadze, sparked by the true story of a French chef who came to the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, opened a restaurant and ultimately died of starvation on its roof.
Nonetheless, A Chef in Love is a poignant romantic drama with powerful performances, especially by French actor Pierre Richard as the chef.

  A Chef in Love
Love, wine and acres of scrumptious food: Nana Djordjadze's film "A Chef in Love" is a voluptuous celebration of abundance set in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, mostly during the early 1920s.
Leading the forces of repression is a ludicrously caricatured general whose cardinal sins are his boasting of having eaten food that a dog wouldn't touch and his insistence on having the inedible fish in a restaurant aquarium cooked and served to him on a platter.
As cinematic banquets go, "A Chef in Love" is not quite as satisfying as "Babette's Feast" or "Big Night." Its culinary metaphors are a little too overbearing and its storytelling a bit too fragmentary.

Even so, he is very much in love with her, as well as with gastronomy and life.
The wider frame of love, life, politics, tragedies and the pursuit of happiness can be counter-productive to the "eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die" thread.

And that's the crux of the problem -- the chef is supposedly in love with Georgia and its native dishes.
Instead, it is a tragi-comedy about a French chef who falls in love in and with Georgia (the country, not the US state) as the Soviets are coming to power.

 Review: A Chef in Love
In A Chef in Love, there doesn't appear to be a compelling reason for it, and the jumps and cuts serve primarily to distract us from the story Dzhordzadze is trying to tell.
That tale is about an aging French chef, Pascal Ichac (Pierre Richard), who, shortly after the first World War, travels from his native country to the Caucasus mountains "in search of new tastes." While there, he meets and falls in love with the flame-haired, fiery Princess Cecilia Abachidze (Nino Kirtadze).
A Chef in Love purports to be about the enduring power of love (even a revolution and all sorts of nasty characters can't kill what Pascal and Cecilia share), but the film's exploration of the subject matter isn't compelling.
