AAW: A Chinese Ghost Story Review
A Chinese Ghost Story is something like a children's animated version of the live action Hong Kong films of the same name.
On the down side, the story is fittingly simple for a kids' movie; there is never much depth to the action, and much of the stuff in the ghost world that could have been scary or at least wild and whimsical ended up being weird for no good reason.
A Chinese Ghost Story is basically a Disney movie with an unusually weird premise and a little bit of that anime spirit bringing it above the level it would have otherwise been stuck at.

A Chinese Ghost Story (Chinese: 倩女幽魂; pinyin: qiànnǚ yōuhún; Wade-Giles: Ch'ien-nü Yu-hun, literal meaning: "The Spirit of a Beauty") is a 1987 Hong Kong movie starring Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma, directed by Ching Siu-tung and produced by Tsui Hark.
The story was inspired (but extensively modified) by and could be considered a loose cinematic presentation of the Qing Dynasty short story writer Pu Songling's Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio.

When I first heard that the "A Chinese Ghost Story" trilogy is coming to DVD I was cautiously ecstatic, especially so because I had heard that Media Asia remastered the movie for DVD and had given the soundtrack a Dolby Digital remix.
I was astounded that they even had plans for the imminent DVD release of "A Chinese Ghost Story", as the movie has always been put in second place by Media Asia and not even a laserdisc version is available.
The movie’s imagery is carefully created, and due to its intricate composition, it often seems like a painting coming to life; the romantic and passionate love story between a human and a ghost flows like a sad poem.

The first half of this film is surprisingly comedic in nature and has a number of scenes that are slyly amusing — while the second half becomes a tale of high adventure — a small band of heroes — trying to save the Kingdom from evil doers.
In what appears to be a few years after the first film ended, Ning (Leslie Cheung) is still burdened down and heavy of heart by his passionate love for Sian but he has sadly resigned himself to never seeing her ghostly image again — “if she reincarnated, she would be a baby now”.
One thing that struck me as intriguing is how the film is a partial throwback to the HK films of the 50s and 60s in terms of its portrayal of the male character.
