Wheat variety and growing conditions influence gluten levels - so-called strong or hard wheats can yield flour with a gluten content of 12 per cent or higher.
Dry weather can concentrate the gluten content of wheat berries and increase their strength and quality in the same way it can concentrate the fruit sugars in grapes and improve the wine they become.

The tales that grains of wheat found in the cerements of Egyptian mummies have been planted and come to maturity are no longer credited, for the vital principle in the wheat berry is extremely evanescent; indeed, it is doubtful whether wheat twenty years old is capable of reproduction.
Wheat grows as far south as Patagonia, and as far north as the edge of the Arctic Circle; it flourishes throughout Europe, and across the whole of northern Asia and in Japan; it is cultivated in Persia, and raised largely in India, as far south as the Nizams dominions.
It is by no means, however, the wheat which yields the greatest number of bushels per acre which is the most valuable from a millers standpoint, for the thinness of the bran and the fineness and strength of the flour are with him important considerations, too often overlooked by the farmer when buying his seed.

A Corner In Wheat: An Analysis
Again the wheat in the titles is not literal but metaphorical, and suggests how the wheat's significance in the capitalist economy becomes generalized, to the extent that human beings are functions of the abstract economy of wheat, not the wheat in the service of human beings.
This resolution is the death of the Wheat King, in which the substance whose abstraction as market value (emphasized by one other title-the telegram informing him of his cornering the market in shot 24) kills him in all its hitherto ignored palpability.
The Wheat King's death in the avalanche of wheat is also the model for the end of Carl Dreyer's Vampyr (1932), in which the evil doctor suffocates in a torrent of flour.

The Elevator and the City | Northwestern University Library   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
As early as the first part of the twentieth century, elevators were employed by filmmakers as visual props to propel a story, provide comic relief, or represent a microcosm of society.
In D.W. Griffith's 1909 film A Corner in Wheat, the elevator became a vertical corridor of death, depicting a greedy businessman's plunge down a grain elevator shaft only to be buried alive under tons of wheat.
For example: in a grim scene from The Hours (2002; see the trailer here), Meryl Streep stands in a freight elevator which, as in the early Corner in Wheat, proves to be a symbolic death tunnel.

The Ingalls Amendment to the Sherman Anti-Trust Bill, by David F. McFarland, Jr., Kansas Historical Quarterly, May, 1942
The fact that the law punishes the highwayman and the burglar, while offering no molestation to the speculator in his schemes, presents a grotesque commentary on the spirit of fairness and justice which is popularly supposed to form the basis of modern civilization.
Under this proposed law if a miller who believes wheat will be twenty cents per bushel higher next October can legitimately contract any amount of wheat to be delivered at that time; but if he should make the purchase purely for speculation he would be a gambler and subject to a fine.
Murdock declared that any man who cornered the grain market "is doing more to injure the country than the combined forces of any power put together." Griffith's A Corner in Wheat (1909), made in an age when the cinema was still struggling with the development of techniques proper to its sphere, is a remarkable work of poetic vision that still stands up today.
The style of these scenes is completely different - the businessmen and brokers make their living in the city, away from nature, in rooms with stifling cigar smoke, and their movements are rapid, intense, even convulsive.
Their mounting distress as they realize that they can't feed their families is intercut with scenes of the Wheat King wheeling and dealing.
