Incubus - A Crow Left of the Murder CD review
Popping A Crow Left of the Murder into the CD player I was pleasantly surprised to find a diverse and well crafted rock album from this quintet from the small town of Calabasas, California.
There is big radio and MTV potential on A Crow Left of the Murder but the choice of the first single “Megalomania” with it’s herky jerky syncopation and 70’s classic rock sound was a bold decision by the band and their label Epic/Immortal records.
The title track “A Crow Left of the Murder” has a driving baseline and a big hook in the chorus that is the musical glue that ties the song together.

There's no doubt from the sound and fury of A Crow Left Of The Murder that Boyd — frequently singled out among his generation of rock songwriters as a model of positivity — is pissed off.
As a singer, Boyd reaches heretofore unimagined heights of vocal dexterity on A Crow Left Of The Murder.
Some may view the intensity of A Crow Left Of The Murder — exemplified by the Top 10 "Megalomaniac" — as a sonic response to the mellow vibe of "Drive." Others may consider the band's renewed ferocity a reaction to the mixed bag of stardom.

A Crow Left of the Murder, the fifth full-length album from the hit making rockers doesn’t do much to improve my perceptions of the band but it does provide a moment or two sonic ecstasy—but they last ever so briefly and in the end can’t sway my opinion.
A Crow Left of the Murder doesn’t expand upon their style nor will it appeal to a different or more mature audience.

The influence of O'Brien is clearly heard on A Crow Left of the Murder, with the album managing to capture the raw energy and sound of a live show, without sounding messy or under-produced.
While the first five tracks of A Crow Left of the Murder threaten but never quite explode, it is only when we reach track six, Sick Sad Little World, that the potential Incubus had been hinting at with the previous tracks is finally realised.
A Crow Left of the Murder is from start to finish a sonic journey that will please most current Incubus fans and no doubt convert a few mainstream rock listeners to the more experimental sound of a band who refuses to bow to public pressure when writing their music.

Nevertheless, A Crow Left of the Murder brings an interesting fusion of Incubus yesterday and today to the table, and the band sounds like they haven't come anywhere near losing their creative spark.
For the curious, this album's title refers to the fact that a group of crows is referred to as a "murder", much like a "school" of fish or whatever, though the word "murder" is likely meant as a double entendre.
Early reports on the album indicated that Incubus had been doing a fair amount of jamming and just having a good time while working on this album (with one of the tracks they recorded extending to like 22 minutes), and I guess this would be part of the fruit of that labor.

It signaled that the band was serious, and they began expanding their rap-metal template on that album and its follow-up, 2001's "Morning View", completing their transition from juvenelia to maturity with 2003's "Crow Left of the Murder".
All this maturation does mean that Incubus may shed some older fans, since the naked ambitions on this record are far removed from the earnest, angst-ridden earlier records, but so be it -- "Crow Left of the Murder" is far more interesting than any of their other records, or their peers'.

From track 2, A Crow Left of the Murder to track 7 Pistola, the band shows how talented it really is. Boyd’s vocals carry most of the songs and although he can sound a little gay at times, he shows that he is an extremely talented lead singer.
The band is also exceptional and one thing that adds to their sound and makes it more original is the fact that they use a DJ.

IGN: A Crow Left Of The Murder Review
Their latest release, A Crow Right of Murder, takes their spacey brand of rock and moves it closer to the norm.
This move to the mainstream without completely abandoning their previous sound was initially enforced by Morning View and now it continues with A Crow Left of the Murder.
But while the lyrics lean toward the jagged—politically speaking, that is—and the darkly tinged outer edges of paranoid sci-fi, A Crow Left of the Murder also reveals itself to be Incubus' most standard rock album to date.

And somewhere between those extremes -- between the Creeds and Red Hot Chili Peppers of the world, if you will -- you'll find Incubus, a band that seek to have it both ways: They want to have their cred and rock out, too.
That, near as we can tell, is the plan on their fifth full-length A Crow Left of the Murder, on which the Cali quintet try to reconcile the rap-metal leanings of their early days with the groovy hip-pop that more recently made them famous.

“A Crow Left of the Murder…” is nothing but ill-timed chord changes, and ramblings from lead singer Brandon Boyd.
During “Megalomaniac”, the first single released, Boyd Rants “I hear you on the radio, you permeate my screen, its' unkind but if I met you in a scissor fight I'd cut off both your wings on principle alone, on principle alone.” These lyrics do not fit the style incubus has previously shown to the public.
When compared to the albums Incubus has released prior to “A Crow Left of the Murder…” this album seems too experimental and does not fit with the Incubus most fans have come to know and enjoy.

But with "A Crow Left of the Murder," Incubus ushers in a new era of glossy prog rock.
In a way, their latest album sees the band embrace all of its California "rawk" roots, by going punk, goth and metal all at once.
So "A Crow Left of the Murder"--whatever the name means is anyone's guess--is a very prog-metal album.

Incubus — “A Crow Left of the Murder” (printable version)
The blast of white noise that announces this latest Incubus effort screams, “This will not be a pop record.” That’s not quite true, but a huge chunk of “Crow” is a return to the harder edges of Incubus’ best past work and a definite shift away from the band’s most popular, more melodious work.
But there are also detours into more intricate, ’80s-tinged pop-rock like “Talk Shows on Mute” and “Southern Girl.” The only real connection to the work that brought it hits is “Here in My Room,” a lush, piano-driven ballad toward the end of the record.
Although they are no longer MTV’s darlings — and there’s a distinct lack of songs that really stick with you on “Crow” Incubus are still one of the better straight-ahead rock bands going.

Full of psychedelic jam breaks and bleeping electronic atmospherics, Murder is the sound of a stoned band after they've raided the fridge.
While the bombastic lead single "Megalomaniac" successfully pinpoints singer Brandon Boyd's feelings about war and man's inhumanity to man, he apparently forgot to tell everyone else that he needed more heavy music to go with the rest of the album's heavy thoughts.
Thus, too much of the disc is filtered through clinical and slightly jazzy rock that renders it a tiny noise about nothing.
