A Damsel in Distress (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Damsel in Distress (RKO) is a 1937 English-themed Hollywood musical comedy film starring Fred Astaire, Joan Fontaine, George Burns and Gracie Allen, with a screenplay by P.G. "Plum" Wodehouse based on his novel, music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, and directed by George Stevens.
The film was made at George Gershwin's instigation, an enthusiasm that Wodehouse mischievously attributed to the fact that his novel was about a successful American songwriter named George Bevan.
It was shot in one continuous take and makes use of a very early version of the zoom lens.

Damsel was his first box-office flop, a strange outcome considering the picture had so much going for it: Astaire at his peak, the zany antics of George Burns and Gracie Allen, a witty P.G. Wodehouse story, and absolutely superb Gershwin songs.
He urged RKO producer Pandro Berman to acquire the rights to the book (previously mounted as a 1919 film and a 1928 play), and Berman in turn used the property as a way of luring George and Ira Gershwin to Hollywood.
The film was shot in the fall and released in late November.

RKO was interested in filming A Damsel in Distress because the novel's romantic lead was a musical comedy composer, allowing a singer and dancer to be cast in the role--and RKO needed a Fred Astaire vehicle.
A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS had an unusual follow-up: in 1998, the score of the film, along with several songs Gershwin had written but which were not used in the picture, were included in a new stage musical of the Wodehouse novel, this time entitled A Foggy Day for one of the songs.
A Damsel in Distress had initially been filmed back in 1919, at the time of its original publication, in a version faithful to the novel.

A Damsel In Distress: I Can't Be Bothered Now
After years of success on the Broadway stage, Fred and Ginger started off their movie careers in 1933 with the frothy comedy, "Flying Down To Rio," and went on to make ten films for the RKO studio, each of which, naturally, included plenty of high-class hoofing and Tim Pan Alley songsmithing.
Ironically, that golden age of musicals preceded the introduction of LPs, so it's been left until now for the release of this comprehensive two-CD anthology, which extracts classic vocal performances of classics from Irving Berlin and the Gershwins, among others, slighter but no less charming novelty songs, and brief dialogue excerpts.

Romero creates one-sided, black-and-white characters who reflect the different mind-frames of the 1960s yet remain somehow just as human as you or I. It's probably a scary enough reflection of racism that Romero can reduce his characters to abstractions but still make them authentic--not that the film isn't scary enough as it is.
The result is a film that has stood the test of time as not only one of the greatest shock-films ever made, but as one of the most startling commentaries about society.

Thankfully, Cronenberg's draft of Charles Edward Pogue's screenplay switches focus from the damsel in distress freakshow of the original 1958 film to (predominately) the slow transformation and decomposition of the human body and what it does to that body's owner.
He also admits that if The Fly were a straight drama, it would be too unbearable and depressing to have ever been filmed, which aligns it with many of the other great horror films that tell great truths through the veil of their genre: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Romero's zombie films, et al.
The first scene of the film is an unmistakable sexual pick-up, in which Goldblum entices Davis to come to his apartment to see his private discovery, something that will change the world.

But what Davis perhaps lacked in romantic spark, she made up in a kind of vulnerable femininity: she perfectly provided a damsel in various stages of distress, and was at her best when her fragile persona became volatile and threatening to Harold's little world.
Davis, as well, seems more adult in the second half of this film: evident in the fact that she received more close-ups, and exhibited more personality opposite Lloyd.
Mildred's first film for Lloyd was From Hand to Mouth, and in this film she played a character which was markedly different from her roles to come: a confident, assured socialite.

Audrey Tautou is used mainly to capitalize on the international acclaim she received for her performance in the hit film, "Amelie." She is a part of the action, not the initiator that Okwe is, and helps to move the film to its pretty, but melancholy ending, without embellishing her character.
