The races lost their footing in the movies as national interest in the sport waned.
It is also a finely crafted movie about a horse that was the living embodiment of all the old horse-movie themes.
In the racing scenes, the camera moves from wide shots of the horses thundering down the track to extreme close-ups of Maguire working the reins, the images shot from side on and front, the choppy editing allowing the thrill of the ride to ripple through every shot like an electric current.

A Day at the Races was the Marx Brothers' follow-up to their incomparable A Night at the Opera.
After several side-splitting routines--Chico selling Groucho tips on the races, Chico and Harpo rescuing Groucho from the clutches of femme fatale Esther Muir, all three Marxes conducting a lunatic "examination" of Margaret Dumont--the fate of the sanitarium rests on a Big Race involving Hi-Hat, a horse belonging to the film's nominal hero, Allan Jones.
Even so, Day at the Races made more money than any other previous Marx Brothers film--the result being that MGM, in the spirit of "they loved it once", would continue recycling Races' best bits for the studio's next three Marx vehicles.

A DAY AT THE RACES is the second of the Marx/Wood/Thalberg collaborations (Marx Brothers, director Sam Wood and producer Irving Thalberg) movies made at MGM, the first the delightful A NIGHT AT THE OPERA.
For all of its classic comedy, "A Day at the Races" (1937) signals the beginning of the Marx Brothers' creative decline after the death of producer Irving Thalberg.
If Thalberg had lived, "A Day at the Races" might have been a worthy follow-up to "A Night at the Opera." Instead, the brilliance of Groucho, Chico and particularly Harpo is undermined by obvious studio tampering.

There was no way that Queen could top their 1975 masterpiece A Night at the Opera and its epic single "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they did the next best thing -- they recorded a companion album, 1976's A Day at the Races.
Although not as meticulously detailed or all-encompassing as its brilliant predecessor, A Day at the Races showed that the band was shedding its five-minute-plus epics in favor of more succinct songs, and becoming one of the world's top rock bands in the process.
A Day at the Races proved to Queen's detractors that the band hadn't run out of steam with the colossal A Night at the Opera.

NIGHT and DAY are rightfully regarded as classics (12th and 59th respectively on the American Film Institute's list of the hundred funniest films), and the rest of the films are at least amusing and entertaining.
The two female romantic leads from NIGHT and DAY are, in fact, still alive and remarkably coherent; while it's nice to hear from contemporary "comedians" about what a great influence the Brothers were and are, it's more satisfying to hear from the co-stars themselves about how the Brothers were to work with.

Groucho's mastery of verbal and physical comedy remains immensely compelling and Harpo is an excellent clown, but the plot is rather tiresome as well as being (of course) total nonsense, and the male romantic lead (Allan Jones) is a prize bore to end all prize bores.

 VH1.com : Movies : Movie : A Day at the Races : Review
The follow-up to A Night at the Opera (arguably the Marx Brothers's best film), A Day at the Races falls a little short of the mark in comparison with Opera, but is still lunatic fun of a high order.
Several classic routines -- including "tutsi-fruitis," in which Chico keeps conning Groucho into buying racing tip books, a riotous medical exam, and a wallpapering sequence -- make the film memorable, as does the extended race finale, which manages to be both terribly funny and moderately tense.
Races would be the last of the Marx Brothers' classic films; while follow-ups like Room Service have some wonderful moments, they lack the sparkle found in the boys' best work.

Most of the extras on the post-1937 films have nothing to do with the actual films themselves, apart from the movie trailers and a few other things, like some audio features ("Where There's Music" from 'The Big Store,' recorded by the dull annoying Tony Martin, and the radio promo for 'Go West').
Still, it's admirable how they probably wanted to include them to give the viewer a better picture of what an actual night at the movies was like in the Thirties and Forties.

One fact that Marx-fans should also note is that there's currently a two-film video available on Amazon, containing both this film and 'A Day at the Races' for pretty much the same price.
