Album: A Day at the Races - SPANISH
Although not as meticulously detailed or all-encompassing as its brilliant predecessor, A Day at the Races showed that the band was shedding its five-minute-plus epics in favor of more succinct songs, and becoming one of the world's top rock bands in the process.
A Day at the Races proved to Queen's detractors that the band hadn't run out of steam with the colossal A Night at the Opera.

There are many similarities between A Day At The Races and its predecessor A Night At The Opera; you could say that the first one is a continuation of the latter.
However, A Day At The Races is an excellent album with superb songs and the only reason why it doesn't come to our memory as quickly as other titles is because Queen did not reinvented themselves for this occasion as they generally did with every new release.
A Day At The Races is an album as great as A Night At The Opera; the only difference is that the latter was released first and therefore, it was much more of a novelty.

A Day at the Races (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Day at the Races is a rock album by English band Queen released in December of 1976.
The A Day at the Races album was the band's first self-produced album after co-producing their first four albums with Roy Thomas Baker (for Queen I, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera) and John Anthony(Queen I).
A Day at the Races was recorded at Sarm West, The Manor and Wessex Studios in England and engineered by Mike Stone.

If A Day At the Races lacks the same level of pop tunesmanship, there is still energy in these tracks, particularly in the rocking "Tie Your Mother Down" and the emotional "Somebody to Love," which set a blueprint for future ballads by the band.
Because it was released between their classic albums A Night At The Opera and News Of The World and because it didn't have a huge hit single, A Day At The Races isn't usually mentioned among Queen's finest work.
A year later out came it's brother of sorts "A Day at the Races" and while it may not be as good as "A Night at the Opera" it is still a fantastic.

And then it hit me. As one cycles through the ten tracks offered on A Day at the Races, one will discover that many of the songs are presented in the same groundbreaking style as their Opera counterparts; in other words, certain tracks on both albums seem to match up, sync in some tangible way.
All ten tracks on the album are amazing, and while it isn't perfect, it is quite unfair that it has been forced to languish in the immense shadow of its older sister for the decades since it has been released.
A Day at the Races is everlasting proof that Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor were in a state of musical genius in the late 1970s, and this album should always be remembered not as A Night at the Opera's shameful cousin but triumphant twin.

Queen - A Day At The Races
For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with the legions of post-Led Zeppelin hard rock bands.
But vocalist Freddie Mercury brought an extravagant sense of camp to the band, pushing them toward kitschy humor and pseudo-classical arrangements, as epitomized on their best-known song, "Bohemian Rhapsody." Mercury, it must be said, was a flamboyant bisexual who managed to keep his sexuality in the closet until his death from AIDS in 1992.
Queen was more or less a straight metal album and failed to receive much acclaim, but Queen II became an unexpected British breakthrough early in 1974.

Though, on the album, it was preceded by a short, multi-tracked guitar instrumental which also served as a coda for closing track "Teo Torriatte," "Tie Your Mother Down" is actually kicked off by a storming, ultra-heavy, and utterly stripped-down (no orchestrations here) Brian May guitar riff.
And fitting this was too, since, though it quickly became a fan favorite at their concerts, the track's racy lyrics (delivered by Freddie Mercury in a similarly caustic tone to the previous year's "Death on Two Legs") seemingly made it inadequate for release as a single.
That is, if it wasn't for the historical circumstances of the day, which found England in the throes of the Sex Pistols and punk rock in general, by whose new standards "Tie Your Mother Down" was positively tame.

The biggest downside when evaluating this album is that it is inevitably in competition with the bands previous masterpiece A Night at the Opera, and while it matches that work in terms of epic sound design and massive layering of vocals and instruments, unfortunately the songwriting is undeniably weaker.
Album opener proper ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ is a reasonable rocker, but probably more suited to the live environment, which probably accounted for its relatively lowly chart single status (peaking at an unimpressive number 31).
Album closer ‘Teo Torriatte’ is almost brilliant – the verse is haunting, and the middle break is stunning, but sadly the actual chorus suffers the twin indignities of both a school choir backing and the 70’s trend for singing bits of songs in foreign languages, both of which now sound terribly naff.

The album is closed by the haunting and incredibly beautiful “Teo Torriate (Let’s Us Cling Together)” where they mix the classical sound with an almost imperceptible oriental atmosphere only evident when Freddie sings part of the lyrics in Japanese.
The album finishes with the Japanese Thank you song, Queen was well respected in Japan and so they made a song with some Japanese lyrics in it, the translation is also present in English in the song.
The album opens with a short unnamed instrumental that leads into the awesome rock track "Tie Your Mother Down." A staple on rock radio, Brian May shines here, tearing through a killer solo before leading the band back into the final sections of the tune.

This is very much a sister album to "A Night at the Opera" which was released shortly before.
The music is very straightforward, short direct songs that rely on lyrics, vocals, simple instruments and energy with little or nothing in the way of the sort of special effects that are sometimes used to reinforce weaker bands.
Like many other albums that are released on CD, the record company seems to have felt the need to add some sort of bonus material.
