  DVDFILE.COM: A Dirty Shame Review
John Waters got his first NC-17 rating with A Dirty Shame, but for one reason or another, it feels as though he doesn't go all the way with it.
A Dirty Shame is one of Waters' best concepts ever, but it ends up being another in an ever-increasing string of disappointments from the beloved trash maven.
But for one reason or another, Waters treads water(s) with A Dirty Shame, and that is too bad - especially when the NC-17 most likely was due to the fact that a nursing home orderly stands in his birthday suit in front of Tracey Ullman for a few seconds.

 TheMovieBoy Review - A Dirty Shame (2004)
The opening half-hour of "A Dirty Shame" is comic gold, a literally non-stop barrage of brilliantly savage sight gags and hilariously lewd one-liners.
Although "A Dirty Shame" warrants the NC-17 rating it receives, at least in regard to the MPAA's stuffy standards, it is ironic that part of the core audience who would go wild for the movie—15-to-17-year-olds—have no chance of seeing it in theaters.
"A Dirty Shame" is what it is, and, regardless of whether it could be deemed "good" or "bad" (a case could be made that it is both at the same time), it is consistently, stomach-churningly watchable.

Dirty? Yes, But No Shame (washingtonpost.com)
WITH HIS SWEETLY sexed-up satire "A Dirty Shame," filmmaker John Waters may, among his many distinctions, have the honor of being the first person to have made an NC-17 film that can be honestly described as warm and fuzzy.
In a sharp departure from his last film, the sour, joyless "Cecil B. DeMented," "A Dirty Shame" returns to the wicked mix of transgression and positivity epitomized by "Pecker" and "Hairspray." With its sex-positive outlook and unsubtle skewering of puritanical prunes, it's a message movie at heart, albeit one with very bad manners.
Inappropriate for children -- heck, it's not even appropriate for most adults -- "A Dirty Shame" is a grown-up bedtime story, with the emphasis on the bed.

A Dirty Shame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Dirty Shame is a 2004 film satire by Baltimore, Maryland filmmaker John Waters starring Tracey Ullman, Selma Blair, Johnny Knoxville, Chris Isaak, Mink Stole, Suzanne Shepherd, Patricia Hearst, Susan Allenbach, Wes Johnson and Jackie Hoffman.
The film, rated NC-17, was a return to style of the sexually raunchy films of his early pre-Hollywood years, such as Pink Flamingos.
A Dirty Shame opened on September 17, 2004 on one Baltimore screen to a respectable $29,384.

 A DIRTY SHAME (RATED NC-17) - DVD
John Waters' A Dirty Shame is perhaps most intriguingly read as an updating of David Cronenberg's sexual zombie film Shivers: although the Canadian auteur's phallic parasites are substituted with the Baltimore auteur's knock-on-the-head slapstick, the core premise retains that essential element of ordinary people-turned-sex-crazed maniacs at the drop of the proverbial hat.
A Dirty Shame distracts from its strengths whenever Waters' glee with celebrity defecation and horror/fascination with the vagina (the third or fourth time a character emerges from between labial bushes, watches start getting checked) overwhelms a satirical eye keen enough to dissect the hypocrisy and sanctimony fuelling our self-proclaimed guardians of good taste.
Too bad that A Dirty Shame takes a good half hour to get going, employs clumsy CGI squirrels for no good reason but to raise the already disquieting spectre of Caddyshack, and, worst of all, despite the gradual homogenizing of Waters' technical style, demonstrates a scattershot, ADD attention to trenchant detail.

If you're watching a movie with a tree's pulsating butthole flexing onscreen, and then the camera cuts to two bushes having sex and you think, "Ho hum," and check your watch, then the movie you're watching has some serious problems.
It probably goes without mentioning that the director of "A Dirty Shame" is John Waters (after all, not since "ET" have the phrase "pulsating butthole" and Steven Spielberg been mentioned in the same sentence).
For those who've been holding out hope that Waters has one more great movie in him, "A Dirty Shame" is a lot like getting to the Promised Land after forty years in the desert and having Moses turn around and say, "Just three hundred more miles."
