Anime Boredom - Voices of a Distant Star anime reviews
Voices of a Distant Star is a spectacular animated short that was written, directed and produced by one ambitious individual - Makoto Shinkai.
It's a concept not too dissimilar to Hideaki Anno's Gunbuster in which a young girl is chosen to fight against a mysterious alien force in the depths of space, only to witness her friends back on Earth become older and older as she stays youthful due to the effects of interstellar travel.
Having said that, I don't think this is really a notable detriment to Voices of a Distant Star because the characters perform their given roles well; complicating these roles may have had an adverse effect.

A star or planet can act as a cosmic lens to magnify and brighten a more distant star lined up behind it.
In most prior microlensing observations, scientists saw a typical brightening pattern, or light curve, indicating a star's gravitational pull was affecting light from an object behind it.
By analyzing the precise shape of the light curve, Bond and his team determined one smaller object is only 0.4 percent the mass of a second, larger object.

spacetoday.net: Hubble discovers distant exoplanet's star
the planet was discovered in 2003 through a technique called microlensing, where the gravity of a foreground star magnifies the light of a background star when the foreground star passes directly between the background star and the Earth.
That magnification turned up the existence of a small companion to the background star believed to be a planet orbiting that star.
The identity of the background star could not be determined, though, until the Hubble Space Telescope observed the region and was able to distinguish the star from the foreground microlensing star.

 Anime Reviews
he story behind the short anime piece Voices of a Distant Star is almost more interesting than the plot of the piece itself: Working alone on a Macintosh, a young Japanese man named Makoto Shinkai wrote, animated and edited his own miniature film, a 25-minute science-fiction meditation about two teenagers separated by time and space.
Thanks to its surprisingly high production values and its remarkable artistic quality, Voices won Shinkai a prestigious award, but it also sparked a small uproar in the anime industry as professionals exclaimed over what may become a new wave of anime: small-scale productions assembled without the benefit, or the interference, of established studios.
If there are other people in his life, Voices doesn't acknowledge them; he and Mikako seem to exist alone in their own little increasingly distended and echoing world, as lovers sometimes do.
