A virtuous woman is a woman of resolution, who, having espoused good principles, is firm and steady to them, and will not be frightened with winds and clouds from any part of her duty, for her security rests in the fear of God and the covering of her husband.
The virtuous woman is a good mother and does not consider these homely duties for the wife to be demeaning but rather rejoices in them as a fulfilment of her responsibilities to her family and to society in general.
Yet the good mother did all her repairs and knitting by the flickering feeble light of a candle with that inner joy which comes by knowing that this sacrifice is well worthy of her family.

A Good Woman (2006) - Starring Helen Hunt, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Campbell Moore
Brimming with sumptuous locales and sweeping romance, "A Good Woman" is a sophisticated ode to Wilde's legendary wit and wisdom, beautifully directed by Mike Barker from a sparkling script by Howard Himelstein.
Windermere, a naïve, newly married young woman, who is thrown into turmoil when she hears gossip about her husband’s alleged affair with an older woman, Mrs.
Indeed, A GOOD WOMAN soars on the romantic chemistry of its nimble, charming cast and the exuberance of Wilde’s language.

The Love of a Good Woman
In these eight stories, a master of the form extends and magnifies her great themes--the vagaries of love, the passion that leads down unexpected paths, the chaos hovering just under the surface of things, and the strange, often comical desires of the human heart.
Time stretches out in some of the stories: a man and a woman look back forty years to the summer they met--the summer, as it turns out, that the true nature of their lives was revealed.
At other times disaster is courted or barely skirted: when a mother has a startling dream about her baby; when a woman, driving her grandchildren to visit the lakeside haunts of her youth, starts a game that could have dangerous consequences.

A Good Woman movie review, In Film Australia
Meanwhile the self-deprecating charisma of Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson) provides his cagey associates with refreshing earnestness: he understands precisely the kind of woman Mrs Erlynne is and regardless longs to slip a ring onto her finger and whisk her down the aisle.
A Good Woman's screenplay, the first fully fleshed script from Howard Himelstein, retains Wilde's fondness for glorious snide and cunning, laced indelibly with a mordant sharpness and humour.
The cast and crew of A Good Woman whistle along to the playful and puckish qualities of Wilde's wonderful word-slinging, and this uniformed interpretation is a fitting tribute to his genius and the timelessness of his form.

 A Good Woman
An adaptation of the Oscar Wilde play about romantic maneuverings on the Italian Riviera, A Good Woman is undermined by its American cast members, notably Helen Hunt as a profiteering courtesan and Scarlett Johansson as a young wife who suspects her husband of infidelity.
But because A Good Woman has been gathering dust for a while, it's likely that Johansson's presence allowed it to finally reach the screen.
Speaking of gowns, Johansson certainly fits the costume (she looks like Veronica Lake) in A Good Woman, but she fails to blend with the rest of the cast, which includes the always-superb Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom) as an affluent divorcée on the trail of another wife.

A Good Woman retains Wilde's plot--though its 19th century moral concerns don't have the same punch in 1930s Italy--and tosses aside most of his impeccable dialogue, sprinkling his clever epigrams here and there in the otherwise undistinguished dialogue.
The other woman is Lady Windermere, `a woman of innocence' (Scarlett Johansson), who is newly married, and devotes herself to her husband.
`A Good Woman' is easy on the eye with two beautiful leading ladies in gorgeous costumes, and fun to see with intelligent dialogues (and it is Oscar Wilde, the genius, so why not witty after all?) The original play's social satire is no longer compelling, now.

It’s hard to focus my mind for very long on the film or my experience of viewing it, since my brain reacts the way it did when I slogged my way through my one and only finance class in college: My nose starts to bleed, and then there’s a complete flout.
It doesn’t speak well of the film that its release was pushed back for more than a year and left to die an art-house death in February.
A Good Woman lacks the energy to fill the screen and would probably have been better suited for A&E or PBS.

The pace of “A Good Woman” is swift and breezy, but director Mike Barker errs in casting Hunt.
Wearing a wig that could compete with Anne Hathaway’s “Brokeback Mountain” hairdo for least flattering of the decade, the usually-brilliant actress looks less like a gifted seductress and more like a woman wandering through the wrong era, hitting on a kid young enough to be her son.

In her ninth superlative collection of short fiction, The Love of a Good Woman, the setting is once again western Canada, and the subject matter is classic Munro: secrets, love, betrayal, and the stuff of ordinary lives.
A narrative in four parts, it begins with the drowning of a small-town optometrist and ripples outward, touching first the boys who find the body, then a spiteful dying woman and her young practical nurse.
Instead, "The Love of a Good Woman" is as thorough and inclusive a portrait of small-town life as can be imagined--its tensions and its deceit, its involuntary bonds.

The Love of a Good Woman Review - Alice Laidlaw
In THE LOVE OF A GOOD WOMAN: STORIES, her ninth collection, she continues to do so with eight stories that, in a deceptively leisurely fashion, explore the mysteries and hidden secrets of small town life, mostly in the hearts of women and girls.
The most complex work in the collection is the title story in which three boys discover a body in a car at the bottom of a river.
Munro then leaves the body and the boys to focus on a lonely young woman caring for an embittered wife; suddenly secrets within mysteries and stories within stories coalesce to conclude with open-ended moral ambiguity.

Meryl Streep fell into this middle-aged career chasm for a good few years before clawing her way out, and Hunt has been off our screens for far too long, presumably for much the same reasons.
The role of Mrs Erlynne, a woman still radiantly beautiful, but with lines on her face that betray her vintage, is made for her and she is nothing short of stunning in the part, giving what is, without a doubt, the best performance of her career.
With two performances this good it's inevitable that everyone else is merely toiling in their shadow.
