Staunton-style chess pieces on a green and buff squared vinyl chess board sit on a table near the entrance of Beeghly Library.
As stated in the constitution, the purpose of the chess club is "to develop an interest in the game among the general OWU student body" and to "give people a chance to play chess at a more organized and formal level." Chess club activities have evolved to meet these purposes.
A student-only chess tournament is held annually and there are occasional special events such as a lecture and simultaneous exhibition by a Master chess player.

While it is generally thought that chess originated from India, the evidence for this theory is weak, although stronger than the evidence for most other theories.
The earliest evidence for chess is the middle-Persian epic Karnamak-i-Artakhshatr-i-Papakan which mentioned the hero as being skilled at chess (more details at Chess in early literature), this work is dated with some reserve at 600 CE, the work could be as early as 260 CE and as late as 1000 CE.
In one case the invention of chess was attributed to Moses (by the rabbi Abraham ibn Ezra 1130 CE).

 Calvo - Mystical Numerology - Chess History
This numerological arrangement on the chess board appears in the Arabic manuscript MS Berlin 7663-1, written by a certain Al Safadi, and according to Wieber "is the only magic square in the form of a chess board present in Arab manuscripts".
A chess piece with a rectilinear movement it would obtain the same sum of 260 after eight moves in any column or in any line of the Safadi board, as we shall call it from this point onward.
A chess piece moving step by step along the two great diagonals which can be plotted on the surface of the board obtains the "magic" result of 260.

 My Problems with History Research
They know a lot about chess history and spend a great deal of time in researching all different facets of this facinating area.
Most of what I found, I discovered of the chess history newsgroup, and most of it consisted of reasonable suppositions and educated guesses.
The general consensus seems to be that the games were off-hand and casual; that Anderssen, playing against a weaker opponent, was experimenting; that, since the scores of the games were discovered in Eichborn's belongings after his death, he only kept a record of his wins and not his losses.

The Chinese Chess Institute publishes several books and booklets on Chinese Chess, both in English as in Chinese; and publishes a regular journal on Xiangqi.
Reform chess, by Laszlo Polgar, coach and father of the Polgar sisters (well known and strong chess players), is a book where Polgar gives non-standard carton boards (of sizes 8 by 6, 9 by 6, etc.), and carton pieces, and more than 2500 problems on these boards.

 Quarterly for Chess History
This is a massive 514-page review of a large number of subjects from chess history.
I am not into chess history (apart from games, theory, and changes in play), but I find much of this material fascinating.
As of the third issue, Fiala speaks of having only 37 subscribers via his website (http://www.moravian-chess.cz), and points out that despite being on sale in chess book dealers around the world, "our own circle of subscribers is needed." As a subscriber, you get 20% off on the price of a book ordered from Moravian chess.

 Staunton 1843 - 1851 - Kings of Chess - Chess History - World Chess Network
One of the most important and controversial figures in the development of modern chess.
Howard Staunton was “The English World Chess Champion” as he is termed in the eponymous volume by Raymond Keene and R. Coles.
Staunton did not originate the design for chessmen named after him, though he did advocate the design and, for a fee, permitted a facsimile of his signature to be included with every “authentic” set.
