I've had the chance to listen to "The Lateness of the Hour," "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim," and "A Kind of Stopwatch" from the first collection.
The theme of isolation is one that Serling often used, as in the far more sympathetic "Time Enough at Last." Soundscaping is good, and the music -- which is present under almost all the dialogue -- builds on the feeling of irritation Phillips's character induces.
"A Hundred Yards Over the Rim" is a bit of a disappointment in this company, and I suspect that it may have been the first episode produced.

It is the year 1847 and in the midst of the barren, heat-scorched New Mexico desert, a wagon train of weary and sick settlers are realizing that they just may not make it to the "Promised Land" of California.
He heads up a towering sand dune and goes "a hundred yards over the rim"...and into the Twilight Zone.
"The Twilight Zone" had quite a few episodes featuring characters thrust out of their ordinary time period ("The Last Flight", "Execution", "Back There") but "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim" is one of the strongest, mostly due to Serling's sturdy script and Robertson's naturalistic portrayal.

The story begins in the California desert in 1847; Chris Horn (Cliff Robertson), leader of a bedraggled wagon train, sets out to search for food, water, and medicine for himself, his ailing child, and the rest of his party.
Upon climbing "over the rim," Chris finds himself in a roadside diner -- in the year 1961.
Written by Rod Serling, "A Hundred Years over the Rim" benefits immeasurably from a driving musical score by Fred Steiner, which would pop up in truncated form in dozens of films and TV series throughout the '60s and '70s.

He tosses another quarter in the box - and this one knocks the other quarter over (the newsboy had made a conscious effort to leave the first quarter standing all day).
Compounding the problem is that several unexplainable coincidences occur during all of this (one guy's car suddenly starts itself when no one's near it and then stops a few seconds later, the lights suddenly go on just in one other guy's house, etc).
Eventually, one guy even shoots and kills one of his neighbors because he thinks it's one of them monsters they've been expecting coming down the street (they'd asked him to walk over to the next neighborhood to see if the power was on over there).

Cliff Robertson stars as Christian Horn, traveling to a new life in California in 1847 in "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim," written by Rod Serling.
Similar to "The Last Flight," this episode hinges on a pivotal image: while searching for water and food for his dying son, Horn walks "over the rim" to discover a paved highway, telephone poles, trucks and a diner.
