He made up experimental batches of Diet Pepsi with every conceivable degree of sweetness--8 per cent, 8.25 per cent, 8.5, and on and on up to 12--gave them to hundreds of people, and looked for the concentration that people liked the most.
When Jim Wigon set up shop that day in Zabar's, then, his operating assumption was that there ought to be some segment of the population that preferred a ketchup made with Stanislaus tomato paste and hand-chopped basil and maple syrup.
Or try one of the numerous private-label brands that make up the bottom of the ketchup market and pay attention to the spice mix; you may well find yourself conscious of the clove note or overwhelmed by a hit of garlic.

Epinions.com - (Top) Ten records from the eighties: On zeitgeists and other such fantasies
It's so hard to capture the zeitgeist in one particular work – I think many of those paradigmatically representative books (like "Catcher") are assigned after the fact and help to construct a collective image of a time period that isn't necessarily literally true or accurate.
In this slightly contrary spirit, then, it’s appropriate that the record which kicks off this list, and also did much to kick the eighties off in some auspicious new directions, should contain a half-mumbled, half-chanted, and insanely, brilliantly catchy monologue about the unreliable and contingent nature of these things we call facts.
His own list of the best albums of the eighties can be found here, and is well worth reading: http://www.epinions.com/content_3006046340.
