A world in which the retainers of a tourney knight chant 'He's blonde/he's pissed/he'll see you in the list!' is clearly on the same continent as one where court miracle workers talk with New York Jewish accents.
He is not a farm boy, but a peasant, a knight's retainer who takes over his lord's role at a jousting tournament and finds out that he is rather good at it.
We are as much as half way into the film before, via an excruciating flashback, we are introduced to William's old Dad, and shown how the boy William came to be apprenticed to a Knight.

 In the Mood for Love
Mood, which is always a key factor in film noir, acts as a character itself, but not to the point of alleviating the need for character development.
Film noir should not leave you high and dry at the end with far more questions than answers.
The questions you have at the end of the film are much the same as you had at the beginning.

Clive Owen - The Sunday Times
Here is a gritty tale of knights with greasy hair set in the bloodstained barbarism of the Dark Ages.
This film claims that Arthur was a real person (Lucius Artorius Castus) and he existed about 500 years before the Arthur of legend.
This is a drama of introspection, a tale of collapsed idealism.

A Knight's Tale fails to rock anyone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Fairy tales always make the best bedtime stories — the good knight rides up gallantly on his white horse, defeats the evil knight in fl, wins the beautiful princess, and saves the kingdom.
Filmed and edited like the typical Hollywood action blockbuster, the predictably high-tension sequences go something like: opponent, William, Jocelyn, William’s horse, close-up of opponent’s eyes, close-up of William’s eyes, then a slow-motion moment of victory as they charge at one another.
We are spoon-fed the bedtime fairy tale along with its take-home message: that one man can “change his stars” if he is a knight at heart.

 Theatre & Film
A Knight’s Tale attempts to ruffle the feathers of middle-age purists with some rock music and 2001 terminology stuffed into a standard old-fashioned adventure, yet one cannot help but see a desperation in the filmmaking and coldness of style.
With A Knight’s Tale, Helgeland has a little more juice on his side and seems hell-bent on challenging anyone to second guess what he is doing with this story.
The film opens with a roaring festival crowd pounding their fists in time to Queen’s “We Will Rock You”—with the host of the ceremonies even lip-synching to the song that would make its world debut 500 years later.

Despite the strictures of his society which forbid peasants to become knights and the sure punishment that awaits if he is discovered, when the opportunity arises to impersonate a knight, William cannot resist.
Though the joust scenes were beautifully filmed, there were a whole lot of them and they were repetitious (there doesn't seem to be much variety of action in a joust).
The film, which clocks in at 132 minutes, could have used some editing, especially the jousting scenes and the interminable flashbacks to William's dad endlessly lecturing about self-betterment.

Reel Criticism - Heath Ledger in A Knights Tale   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The films primary strength lies within the acting of the group of people who surround William Thatcher (played by Heath Ledger from Patriot Games) as whenever they are all together it is always entertaining.
One aspect of the film, which you will either love or hate (Ziggy here falls on the direct side of hate in regards to it), is the use of modern rock music throughout the film.
Surprisingly it is a very long film clocking in at two hours and twelve minutes and that is as well another reasoning the film gets a lower grade.

Filmed in Morocco, the story now leads us into incredible shots of sand dunes, tracking camera shots rolling over hill tops to reveal masses of tents or people on camels coming across the screen.

Filmtracks: A Knight's Tale (Carter Burwell)
The film is another disgraceful attempt to inject a historical period with modern teenage hunks and electric guitars, with reasonable results.
The ridiculous nature of the film puts a composer in a difficult position, forcing him or her to balance the traditional sounds of the time with the modern edge that studio producers are seeking.
Ironically, A Knight's Tale is still one of Burwell's seemingly larger attempts at scoring an orchestral theme of heroicism, and one has to believe that a larger orchestra could have done great justice to the action cues as written for the film.

I think that the only highlight during the whole film was seeing the delightful David Schneider, of the Friday Night Armistice, in his five second scene, where he exuded more talent than the rest of the cast did in the whole of the film.
Most films of this genre are usually made by American studios - due to the time period (and the non existence of the USA in the 14th century!), for once the Americans cannot come in and save the day at the end of the film.

Regardless, Roy O'Bannon is now officially a sidekick, having cast the role of partner aside sometime between the end of the last film and the beginning of this one.
Though the increased scope and personal touches are occasionally at odds with each other, in turns detracting from Roy's character, or shortchanging certain bits of potential giddiness (like a classic swordfight with Jack the Ripper, perhaps?), the overall effect of this draft is one of absolute joy.

And Geoff's riffs are brilliantly fabricated tales of William's courageous deeds and monastic meditations: he dazzles the royal crowds with his inventiveness and brash deliveries, directly addressing those fans who watch the whole shebang "without seat cushions" -- in short time, William becomes the People's Hero.
A Knight's Tale is all about entertainment, especially the trials and traumas that come with celebrity when it's bequeathed on someone from a class and culture outside Hollywood (or other) royalty.

The Knight's Tale follows the smelly footprints of a peasant (Heath Ledger), a knight wannabe who, through a mishmash of desperation and timely opportunity, and an uncanny ability to master new skills on the fly, masquerades as a real knight and enters jousting competitions.
Yes this is Geoffrey Chaucer: the finest writer of medieval times is portrayed not as the affable royal official and diplomat he was, but as an affable pauper with a clothing-unfriendly gambling habit.
Most importantly The Knight's Tale is charged with something the Studio corporations seem to have largely given up even trying to bottle these days.
