A Life Less Ordinary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Life Loss Ordinary (1997) was directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting), and written by Boyle and John Hodge.
Following the international success of Trainspotting, Hodge and Boyle sought to use funding from Channel 4 to make a film that would appeal to a U.S. audience but this follow up proved something of a mis-fire.
Unusually, the film was serialised as a full-length comic strip within leading British comic 2000AD, written by then-editor David Bishop and drawn by Steve Yeowell - the first film to receive such treatment in Britain for almost a decade.

I was born on the outskirts of the city of Kyoto in the bitter cold winter of 1851.
When the good lady died a few years later, she left everything to me, including the house and a substantial amount of money to live on long ago set aside for old age by my great-uncle.
I had built a new life for myself by then, keeping busy by occasionally giving vocal and instrument lessons to the daughters of Tokyo families.

Their new A Life Less Ordinary inclines to the light -- divine, that is. It opens in a bleached-white bureaucratic Heaven that is uncomfortably reminiscent of such well-intended failures as Albert Brooks's Defending Your Life and Alan Rudolph's Made in Heaven.
Sometimes A Life simply tries too hard to be madcap and strange, whereupon it falls as flat as does Stanley Tucci early on in the film's ill-conceived William Tell sequence.
A Life has the courage to be a film less ordinary, and though its reach exceeds its grasp, it shows what Heaven is for.

Ordinary is not the word that comes to mind when you see Paula's stellar performance - gloriously funny at times, at others poignant and affecting - as the 21-year-old daughter with Downs to Lindsay Duncan's desperately protective mother in the film Afterlife, opening in London this week.
Indeed, this is a lead role, with Kevin McKidd as her other co-star, to make Paula the envy of many ordinary young wannabe actors.

With A LIFE LESS THAN ORDINARY, the team takes a brave leap into Hollywood studio film-making with enormous budget, but they end up with an uncompelling quirky movie that doesn't seem to make any sense.
I don't expect A LIFE LESS ORDINARY to be a fast-paced and hard hitting movie the way TRAINSPOTTING was, since it's a love story.

We will see a life of great contrasts as we watch Jesus negotiate his way through a tidal wave of popularity, and yet he meets with fierce opposition from the religious establishment.
It is fuelled by a solid commitment to solitude, which is maintained during one of the busiest seasons of Jesus’ life and ministry.
As we observe his walk, we realise that the real good life is available to all of us through him, but it will not be without some challenges, sacrifices, misunderstandings and very real conflicts.

Even so, the millions who embraced their first two films may find "A Life Less Ordinary" a bit less enchanting; certainly the 90 minutes that follow that poolside scene don't come close to topping it.
