Although the Wicked Witch of the West is the most famous of Oz's villains (thanks to the popular 1939 film The Wizard of Oz), the Nome King is the closest the book series has to a main antagonist.
The Nome King was portrayed on film by Nicol Williamson in 1985's Return to Oz which was based loosely on the books Ozma of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz.

Given the title Princess Soraya of Iran after the divorce, she briefly debuted as a film actress, appearing in the 1965 movie "Three Faces of a Woman," and became mistress of its Italian director Franco Indovina, 1932-1972.
They married in 1939 and divorced in 1948 after her failure to produce an heir to the throne (although later she did in fact have a son with her second husband).
Ironically, instead of decreasing British and Russian influence, this policy only provided new impetus for continued interference in Iranian affairs and proved Reza's undoing: in 1939, Germany invaded Poland and World War II began.

World Cinema: Directors -- Ernst Lubitsch
The coming of sound did not diminish Lubitsch's talent or acumen (The Love Parade, 1929, starring Maurice Chevalier; Monte Carlo, 1930), and in 1935 he became director of production at Paramount, though it was for MGM that he made the sparkling political comedy Ninotchka (1939), with Greta Garbo.
His international breakthrough came in 1919, with a string of hits: Die Austernprinzessin / The Oyster Princess, Madame Dubarry / Passion, Die Puppe.
Joining Max Reinhardt's ensemble in 1911, Lubitsch became successful as a film actor in 1913, creating the comic persona of the wily and lecherous shop assistant (for instance in Die ideale Gattin and Die Firma heiratet, both 1913), before also taking over direction (first film: Fräulein Seifenschaum, 1915).

Playing the sweet Melanie Hamilton, Olivia received her first nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, only losing out to one of her co-stars in the film, Hattie McDaniel.
Warners loaned de Havilland to David O. Selznick, who cleverly cast her against type as the long-suffering Melanie in Gone With the Wind (1939), for which she earned a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination, and screen immortality.
Returning to her home studio, de Havilland appeared in Santa Fe Trail (1940), The Strawberry Blonde (a cunning comic part), They Died With Their Boots On (both 1941), The Male Animal (1942), and Princess O'Rourke (1943).

 Animation in the Middle Kingdom
Wan Laiming and Wan Guchan's Princess Iron Fan (1941), a seminal work in Chinese animation, is by some accounts the third animated feature ever made, after Disney's Snow White and the Fleischer's Gulliver's Travels (1939).
Perhaps it's the bigger budget that allows for an impressive variety of animation techniques—everything from simple line drawings to full-blown CGI effects—or perhaps it's the filmmakers' uniquely rueful sensibilities, but McDull is a delight on a level Grandma never quite achieves.
Te Wei's Feeling from Mountain and Water (1988) is an even more exquisite short, a twenty-minute, totally wordless tale of a young boy who learns to play music from an old man. As elegantly paced as recited poetry, with landscapes that drown you in their beauty, the film is a transcendental work of art.
