While Bobby was once a well know author and sought after professor but now he is a shell of a man reduced by lethargy and alcohol to a disheveled creature in a tattered bathrobe.
Bobby and Lawson sit around the house in haze of tobacco smoke and booze quoting lines from the literary giants of the twentieth century, devoid of any direction, any sense of purpose.
Long and Pursy are both so strong willed and set in their ways that only a person like Lawson who is so unsure of his own life could possibly mediate between them, his need to please both forms the bridge to bring them together.

Bobby is a great storyteller, and he has created a fantasy around himself, a protective shell of southern charm and old quotes; he has made a character of himself.
A Love Song For Bobby Long is not a great film, and it is certainly nothing new, but it is highly watchable, if only for the memorable work by this talented cast and the stunning, vibrant photography.

I'm not willing to go that far, but I will say two things: the actress' work in A Love Song for Bobby Long re-enforces my opinion that Johansson is one of the brightest stars of her generation, and she is hands-down the best thing about this movie.
The A-list star of A Love Song for Bobby Long is John Travolta, who appears greatly aged as a result of makeup and white hair, but there is no moment in which Travolta manages to steal the spotlight from Johansson.
She arrives too late for the funeral, and discovers that her mother's house is inhabited by two men: the rude and obnoxious Bobby Long (Travolta) and his younger, gentler protégé, Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht).
