I first stumbled across AMD a couple years ago, when it was still young, and wasn't impressed.
Comparing something like DS to something like AMD, where the artist is obviously trying to further his abilities through repetition though is a mistake.

Posted on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 - 07:28 PM Sean Howard's A Modest Destiny webcomic site was shut down temporarily today, in an odd twist of events brought about through Howard's unhappiness with some Penny Arcade forum-goers.
Included in this letter was the statement that Howard had already "shut down six web comics that were using his art", thus potentially implying that the same could happen to the PA site, if this alleged copyright infringement was not dealt with quickly.
Call it a hunch (thump thump) but my immediate suspicion is that the pretty damn mediocre AMD suddenly got 900000000% more readers today than it ever had before.

Westerns, as a rule, tend to reinforce the ideal that everyone is - and should be - responsible for their own destiny and free from oppression.
That's not exactly an original notion in fiction, but Westerns are close enough in terms of history that it's easier for people to relate to the ideals and methodology in that context than in, say, the French revolution.

This isn’t a necessary side effect of using heavily pixellated art, by the way.
Sean Howard uses original pixel art for his comic A Modest Destiny, but it comes out much, much cleaner and easier to look at:
The difference is partly in the scale, of course: A Modest Destiny uses significantly more pixels in its character models than 8-Bit Theater does, which gives it an automatic edge in distinctness.
