Dizzy Gillespie - Night in Tunisia: The Very Best of Dizzy Gillespie (Album Review)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Considering that it focuses upon a mere 3 ½-year segment of a career that spanned more than half of a century, there’s little doubt that Night in Tunisia: The Very Best of Dizzy Gillespie is extremely limited in its scope.
As the rest of the jazz community was catching up to Gillespie, however, he again began to move in bold, new directions, and the latter half of Night in Tunisia: The Very Best of Dizzy Gillespie is devoted to his early, pioneering pursuits in the field of Afro-Cuban jazz.
Although jazz aficionados likely have all of the material contained on Night in Tunisia: The Very Best of Dizzy Gillespie within their archives, the outing undoubtedly is an invaluable asset to the collections of more casual fans.

DG can also mean Deo gratias, and this, by the grace of God, is Dizzy Gillespie in terrific trumpet form when not bringing together his verbal reflections on jazz, its African cultural roots, and continuities across political boundaries and stormy, oily seas.

Even in 1959, when this album was recorded, Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night In Tunisia” was the subject of endless recorded versions, most of them dull.
One disappointment, for me, was Night in Tunisia - it is too fast, Morgan's intro is hurried and perfunctory and rather spoils the theme for me, even Shorter seems uncomfortable, although both recover with good solos.
This recording explodes with the best version ever of "A Night In Tunisia." Interesting that Dizzy always described Art Blakey as "The Volcano." This CD has everything.

Blakey's drumming contributes an explosive drive to this CD's version of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," a coiling snake of bop exoticism, while "So Tired" is a Timmons essay in deep funk, like his better-known "Moanin'" and "Dat Dere" an elemental tune with subtle underpinnings.
"A Night in Tunisia" was recorded over two sessions yielding enough material for this album and "Like Someone in Love." The latter album is great as well, but there is just something about the sequence of the Tunisia tracks that makes it a masterpiece.
