Casey is a free spirit who sleeps in a different stranger’s house every night, and teaches Ed a game called “ride or hide,” in which, whenever a car comes down the street, they have to decide whether to hide, or to stay in the open and chance that it is a psychopath or criminal.

References to the Cthulhu mythos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny is about a battle between those who want to open the gate to the Elder Gods, and those who wish to keep it closed.
In It, it is mentioned in the third interlude that in the town of Derry in 1930 lived "...that old geezer who paints those funny pictures and drinks all night at Wally's-Pickman, I think his name is." The reference is undoubtedly to Richard Upton Pickman.
Night Gallery: This post-Twilight Zone vehicle of Rod Serling often made use of Lovecraft's short fiction, including adaptations of Cool Air, and Pickman's Model.

Night in the Lonesome October : Richard Laymon
There is not a moment when a female character is in a scene that Laymon doesn't start talking about her erect nipples or shapely buttocks etc. I don't mind the salacious writing, but it gets kind of tiresome and distracting after a while.
The mysterious young girl that Ed also encounters during his night walks is another one-dimensional character who isn't what she seems (duh) and I started to wonder what Laymon was thinking when he concocted this story.

Poe relates a man’s nighttime walk through the misty woods of October along a path that eventually leads him to the tomb of his lost love, Ulalume.
The poem was written shortly after the death of Poe’s young wife, Virginia, in 1847 and seems to be about the conflicting feeling he had at the time between devotion to her memory and the new romantic interests that had come his way.
To that end, during a brief period of restored health after years of illness and depression compounded by alcohol, Poe announced a lecture to be given at the Society Library of New York.

Most of the novel takes place in night rambles in which Edward finds a serial killer, a mad bicycling granny, a pair of jeep riding sisters, and a clan of cannibal trolls who seem to work as the town's cleanup squad.
Luckily Logan's October is less lonesome thanks to nubile young ladies such as Casey (the mysterious woman he follows,) and Elaine (mutual friend of his and Holly's).

Well, to be honest, _A Night in the Lonesome October_ isn't comparable to _Lord of Light_ either, but it's definitely up there with _Roadmarks_ or _Jack of Shadows_ or _This Immortal_.
The Gahan Wilson illustrations add an appropriate touch of macabre humor, although their placement could have been better -- one in particular is several pages _ahead_ of the corresponding text and rather spoils a surprise.

A group of players gathers at a certain magical location, and on the last night of October when the moon is high, work to either open or close the door that separates our reality from that of the Elder Gods.
One of the most amusing tricks Zelazny uses in telling his story is the conceit that each of the players has an animal familiar, and the familiars talk, deal, and squabble amongst themselves in a way that mirrors the larger narrative.
