"A Perfect Murder" is such an instance, in which director Andrew Davis has taken the play "Dial M for Murder" and Hitchcock’s film version of the same name to create a thriller based on the same premise, weaving in new elements that grant the film wider appeal to today’s audiences.
Nothing indicates his plan for the perfect murder, and even when things go haywire, he manages to stay on top most of the time.
"A Perfect Murder" is a slick thriller of the nineties, using a well-known theme to its advantage.

Perfect murder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The perfect murder is a murder which benefits the murderer, but also has no negative consequences for the murderer; usually, this simply means that the murderer is never caught.
The concept of the perfect murder is closely connected with detective fiction and often crops up in the whodunit and the locked room mystery.
In the latter case, the murderer usually tries to make their crime 'perfect' by creating the illusion that there is no physically possible way in which they could have committed the crime.

Directed by Chicagoan Andrew Davis, A Perfect Murder stars Michael Douglas and Gwenneth Paltrow as a recently married couple (some would suggest that this is quite logical since Paltrow has only been of consenting age for 7 years), with a lack of trust and respect in their union.
Douglas decides the only way out of bankruptcy is to have Paltrow's lover, Viggo Mortensen, murder Paltrow, so that he, Douglas, will be able collect her mammoth trust fund, which he would not have otherwise been able to get his hands on.

But this isn't a perfect story and, consequently, it is far less than a perfect TV project.
While "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town" isn't the most intellectual project on CBS' docket, it's certainly not the car wreck a lot of people are expecting.

"Perfect Murder" is an avalanche of information, packed with details galore, but the surprises have less to do with solving the crime or the presumed top suspects, John and Patsy Ramsey, the girl's parents, than with the indiscretions and manipulations of those working the case.
Only those with tunnel vision will be indignant to read that Patsy shed her southern beauty queen demeanor to reveal a tougher, more combative side during police interviews, or that John was full of "rage" when he discovered his house had been flooded.

Frankly, Dial M for Murder is not one of the master director's greatest efforts, so there is ample room for improvement.
Unfortunately, instead of updating the script, ironing out some of the faults, and speeding up the pace a little, A Perfect Murder has inexplicably managed to eliminate almost everything that was worthwhile about Dial M for Murder, leaving behind the nearly-unwatchable wreckage of a would-be '90s thriller.
A Perfect Murder isn't a strict remake of Dial M for Murder, but it does borrow heavily from Frederick Knott's play (which was also the source material for Hitchcock's version, as well as a 1981 made-for-TV retelling).

A clenching remake of 1954's "Dial M for Murder," it succeeds wildly at tying stomachs in knots, but takes its cues from the currently chic erotic thriller genre rather than try to reproduce the work of a master.
Directed by Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive") with an eye for the gripping, the intelligent and the sordid, "Murder" opens in the industrial loft of an artist (Viggo Mortensen, "G.I. Jane") during a hot and heavy sex scene with Douglas' wealthy wife, the elegantly refined yet spicy Gwyneth Paltrow.
Steven has the perfect plan (of course) -- a intricate breaking and entering scenario at the couple's Central Park West penthouse in which Emily will be killed while running to answer a persistently ringing phone, thereby "surprising" the intruder.
