 AML-List Review: Treason
Treason passes itself off as a science fiction novel -- it even says so on the spine -- but in reality is fantasy dressed up as science fiction.
The story transpires on a distant planet; there's some genetics and interstellar space travel thrown in; but beyond that the characters may as well have magic wands and spell books at their disposal, for all the satisfaction the thin science fictional justifications provide.
The Mueller kingdom is one of eighty-some nations on the planet Treason, each descending from a rebellious individual banished there by a galactic empire, and each named after that ancestor.

And for that crime they and their families were exiled forever to a planet called Treason, a planet where simple iron is rarer than gold, and told that they could return to the Offworld when they could build a starship to get them there.
This is the premise of Treason, Orson Scott Card's revision of one of his earliest novels, A Planet called Treason, and it provides the launchpad for a thrilling tale of society, destiny, and man's development of the self.
The low gravity of Treason allows the trees of Nkumai to grow hundreds of feet in height, and houses connected by rope bridges and ladders span that height in an unconquerable city where height is a visible symbol of social merit.

The ancestors of the planet's inhabitants were outcasts from earth, sent here for their crimes - the planet has no natural resources for them to escape - and hence is called Planet Treason.

Not Yet Enlightened: Stem Cells and Treason
As the novel and planet reveal their secrets, it becomes clear that the peoples are descended from a cargoload of transported convicts, each of whom gave a name to the tribe/subspecies that subsequently developed.
As I recall my early teen impressions of Treason, it leaves one with a deep sadness: the idea of an entire planet's civilizations' being punished--and worse, that the genetic evolution of future generations should have been encouraged as divisive--struck me as an extraordinary injustice.
What really sticks in one's memory (besides the concept of an entire planet's being left in speciefied ignorance) is the description of the community that Lanik left.

Treason shows evidence of many of the concerns that Card would come to have in his later novels-- self-determination, actualization of innate ability, the morality of violent self-defense versus the morality of pacifism, and the destiny of brilliant youths.
Set on a planet where the best radical minds of a generation were exiled without iron, Treason uses science fiction as a background for a thoughtful look at some serious issues.
Treason is clearly an early novel, and has aspects that are too obviously allegorical.

Novels such as Capitol or A Planet Called Treason rely in part upon setting, but this concern lessens in subsequent novels.
