In 1911, Edgar Rice Burroughs, now better known as the creator of the character Tarzan, began his writing career with A Princess of Mars, a rousing tale of pulp adventure on the planet Barsoom or Mars.
A Princess of Mars was possibly the first fiction of the 20th century to feature a constructed language; although "Barsoomian" was not particularly developed, it did add verisimilitude to the narrative.
With the Tarzan comic strip a popular success, newspapers began a comic strip adaptation of A Princess of Mars drawn by Edgar Rice Burroughs' son, John Coleman Burroughs.

OK i just heard that Kerry Conran (director of Sky Captain) is signed on to direct A Princess Of Mars, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs series of adventure/sci-fi novels.
Basically the novels are about a Civil War soldier mysteriously transported to Mars, where he encounters a bizarre alien civilisation and has adventures and stuff.
The princess of the title is Deja Thoris, a kinda mixture of Cleopatra and Tarzan (well, a female Tarzan obviously).

Now, A PRINCESS OF MARS, the first ERB Martian novel is now in the public domain, but the word on the street is that the Burrough Estate was not too pleased with the adaptation nonetheless.
PRINCESS OF MARS uses characters technically out of copyright, but uses characters still closely tied into the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
