Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Archer avoids punishment for prison diary
Jeffrey Archer will not be punished for publishing his diary as long as he stays within prison rules until next April, it emerged tonight.
His punishment - suspended for six months - is two weeks without prison allowance and a fortnight without being able to buy extras from the canteen but if he avoids a further breach of prison rules, which would include more published diaries, the measures will not be enacted.
A Prison Diary, which is accredited to Archer's prison number - FF 8282 - rather than his name, looks at the peer's spell in one of Britain's toughest prisons and life among some of the most serious criminals.

In the diary, Archer describes his life as prisoner FF8282 from the moment he was first led from the docks after being handed down his sentence for perjury and perverting the course of justice during a 1987 libel case.
The diary also reveals how the former MP was strip-searched for drugs as he arrived in prison, and put on suicide watch during his first night.
Yesterday, Lady Archer said her husband felt the diaries discussed important issues concerning prison life and was pleased they were being serialised despite the risk of lengthening his sentence.

Prisoners and guards routinely line up outside his cell to ask for his autograph, to write letters, and to seek advice on their appeals.
When A Prison Diary was published in England, it was condemned by the prison authorities, and praised by the critics.

Detained for 113 days, Meer secretly maintained a diary after the women were released from solitary confinement and held in a shared prison with access to newspapers following the revision of the security laws.
In her diary, Meer, an avid writer, kept details of not only the squalid conditions at the prison, but also of the relationships that developed between the political detainees.

But as he points out after a fight between prisoners results in a man's head being split open by a snooker ball, "I go into great detail to describe this incident simply because those casually reading this diary might be left with an impression that life at Wayland is almost bearable.
