A Question of Balance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Question of Balance is a 1970 album by The Moody Blues.
For the first time, The Moody Blues used political strife as a basis for songwriting with the U.K. number one hit "Question", which dealt with the controversy resulting from the ongoing Vietnam War.
Released in 1970, the album went top 5 in both the U.S. and the U.K. However, the group would abandon the stripped-down sounds of A Question of Balance for the lusher sounds of their next two albums, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour and Seventh Sojourn.

What players call balance is more of a sense of justice (in English I prefer to use the word "fairness", which does not have a French equivalent), rather than balance.
The balance of a game is thus more of a balance between players of which none must profit from an excessive advantage.
Balance is also there to provide a rhythm to the story which must develop from each playing.

CSP - 'A Question of Balance'
Whatever form egoic resistance may take, as long as an individual is afraid or unwilling to be honest with oneself and look directly at the truth of one's own make-up and beliefs about reality, it is not possible to perceive another clearly, particularly someone who has attained more advanced levels of development.
It is easy to question apparently irrational, funny or bizarre beliefs of others, but one's own are usually assumed to be true.
These questions will not provide definitive guidelines for action, but they can provide a basis of self-awareness and thereby reduce the likelihood of making regrettable choices.

Drummers who play using a heel-down technique usually don't have as many problems balancing, since their heels are resting on the pedals.
One of them is when the individual limbs are playing counterlines, and one or more of the limbs gets out of sync with the others, either because a limb can't keep up, or maybe you haven't trained your limbs to quite land together when they're supposed to.
Being balanced, breathing normally, and having a comfortable posture are all critical to a good performance.

The question moves away from,"Is this work really so important that my life should be put on hold?", and (as the gaze shifts to the partner's floodlit office) becomes, "If s/he can be here 'till all hours, then it must be important".

I lost interest in Moody Blues lyrics about eight decades ago, but my good sources inform me that these are a bunch of hippie-derived, tree-hugging ditties about Mother Earth in all of her glory and why it is important that old, fat guys to stop farting so that it doesn't get too polluted.
Alright, their Mellotron style isn't quite as prominent with this album as it was in the last three, but that's not why I like A Question of Balance better than those.
However, with A Question of Balance, the melodies are so increasingly nice that I can listen to this album and enjoy the Moody Blues without any reservations whatsoever.

For their fifth album, 1970's "A Question Of Balance," the Moodies decided to record as simply and as close to a live performance as possible.
Justin Hayward's "Question" is one of the Moodies' most famous tunes, with one of Justin's best vocal performances, that alternates between being a ferocious acoustic rocker (just listen to Justin *strrrruuum* that guitar!), and a lovely ballad in the bridge section, and then back again.
A QUESTION OF BALANCE has more than withstood any test of time, and I very enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who is intrigued by the substantive originality of rock music from the 60s and early 70s (that most fascinating era!).

And it was to produce one of the finest songs that the Moody Blues ever recorded, "Question", with which the album opened.
This in effect was virtually two songs joined together, the faster opening and closing sections sandwiching the slower and wistful questioning words of the middle section.
The album closes with the other item of the title of this particular album, "The Balance", by Graeme Edge, another of the oratorical style songs of which the Moodies were particularly fond, especially during the early years.

It is always amusing to see the giant westerner with his size 14 feet hanging over the edge of the steps, gingerly picking his way down from the mall whilst ready to grab at the nearest passer-by on the first sign of toppling.

A QUESTION OF BALANCE is a fine album, and a clear preparation for its successor EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR, one of the band's finest moments.
'A Question of Balance', the fifth album released by the Moody Blues during their first string of releases, often suffers from an unjustifiable volume of criticism from those who felt the band lost their way somewhat with this work.
Opening with 'Question', this album sets on a similar path to its predecessor, 'To Our Children's Children's Children' - the opener is a rocky, catchy, excellent song, the rest of the album fails to top.

The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues's 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process.
Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers.
"Question Of Balance", a 1970 release now remastered to ensure today's full rich sound capabilities, from its opening track (Question) to its closer (The Balance), is at least equal to the group's classic "Days of Future Passed" and "In Search of the Lost Chord" albums.

The group's first real attempt at a harder rock sound still has some psychedelic elements, but they're achieved with an overall leaner studio sound.
The surprisingly jagged opening track, "Question," recorded several months earlier, became a popular concert number as well as a number two (or number one, depending upon whose chart one looks at) single.
Graeme Edge's "Don't You Feel Small" and Justin Hayward's "It's Up to You" both had a great beat, but the real highlight here is John Lodge's "Tortoise and the Hare," a fast-paced number that the band used to rip through in concert with some searing guitar solos by Hayward.

For the re-invention album that it's supposed to be, the Moody Blues' A Question Of Balance really seems to be less about re-inventing the seminal 60s band's sound and more about changing how the band achieved that sound.
That song in particular is one I've always loved from a lyrical standpoint, with the underlying question of "why are these things happening?" tackling the "hate and death and war" that outlasted the 60s peace movement.

Exploring the entire corpus of Charles Seeger's writing, A Question of Balance highlights the work of those persons who most influenced him, especially Henri Bergson, Bertrand Russell, and Ralph Perry.
Invited to inaugurate the music department at the University of California's Berkeley campus in 1912, Seeger became keenly aware of his deficiencies in general education and put himself on a rigorous regimen of intellectual development that included studying history, anthropology, political theory, and philosophy.
