The "scanner" of the title is a holographic recorder/projector on which the main character views clips of his own life but doesn't recognize them.

A Scanner Darkly is one of our father's most personal stories because much of it is based on his own experiences.

Scanner is a classic and it would be a pity to see it botched in a movie.
A Scanner Darkly: Not long ago rumours swirled that Richard Linklater ("Waking Life") was tapped by Soderbergh and Clooney at Section Eight to direct an animated version Philip K. Dick's seminal SF/drug novel "A Scanner Darkly".
The movie is said to be animated in the same sense that 'Waking Life' is said to be animated.

If I had changed my entire life, I would now be applying for a job with the team who are making A Scanner Darkly.
The stills also show some of the actors in character, and for this kind of movie that means a lot more than normal.
I don't know if that really means anything, and there are exceptions in some of the other movies based off his work, but it's refreshing to see the movie with an ensemble cast, and a more artistic director.

Just shortly after the bad news of ‘ A Scanner Darkly ‘ being pushed back to march 2006 we get to see the first official poster from the movie with Keanu on it (maybe there will be more teaser posters with different characters on them).
“Scanner”; looks cool, and it’s a pity we have to wait so long for it to arrive.
Well I’d rather see a finished movie which looks awesome than a half made thing just to make the release date.

Excellent quality pictures just released from A Scanner Darkly prove that there's a whole heap of style and talent poured into them.
Not surprising since the movie has been shot live action with the animation crafted over the top, and it gives it such a unique quality, I can't wait to see some form of teaser from this.
Although I personally disliked the actual content of the movie, the visual style is out of this world.

A Scanner Darkly is one of my favorites of his, because it seemed the most personal.

Now, my engineer has brought this movie in to me. I don’t want to lose the magic, but he is going to ask me if I watched it when I return the tape.
When A.I., the movie by Steven Speilberg staring Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law, came out, there was a whole website of cool stuff affiliated with the movie.
It was enough to make me excited about the movie, but there doesn’t seem to be any misleading articles there unless you count the “ advertisement ” for the NS-5.

Having read (and advised on) two versions of Linklater’s script, I can say that, while the film updates the historical vibe from paranoid 70s to paranoid 00s, the script is dark and tart, funny and faithful.
PKD wrote a lot of great books, but A Scanner Darkly is the one I would hand to a literary professor.

Seeing as how Scanner is my favourite of all PK Dick's novels, bar none (and I've read most of them, including the non-SF Mary and the Giant, In Milton Lumky Territory etc), I am ambivalent.
July 16, 2004, 09:40 AM The first movie I ever saw Keanu Reeves in was called "River's Edge", about a high school kid who kills his girlfriend and all the other kids in school go down to the river's edge on a daily basis to watch the body decompose.
However, if I gave a copy of A Scanner Darkly to most people I know, and they read it, they would not classify it as SF (if called upon to classify it at all).

This is one of my favorite books, so I'd really like this to be a great movie - but at least, with this Linklater thing, I can't imagine it will be lukewarm.
