KODAK: A hurricane helps bring Kurosawa's last script to the screen - Print Friendly Version
It was therefore a surprise to find that The Sea Watches, the script that the maestro had been working on at the time of his death in 1998, was about a group of prostitutes working in Tokyo in the mid-1800s.
Most of the scenes are set in a small 7.5 square metre room.
Every part of every scene needed to be focused so as not to restrict editing.

The sea salt scene Vegetarian Times - Find Articles
In the case of solar salt, sea water is put into shallow outdoor basins and allowed to evaporate until salt crystals emerge; in mined salt, water is pumped into salt mines to create a well of brine, which is then pumped into indoor vessels and heated until, once again, salt crystals emerge.
Hain Sea Salt, for instance, is 99.99 percent sodium chloride,.005 percent calcium sulfate,.003 percent magnesium chloride and.002 percent sodium sulfate.
Still, some extol the virtues of sea salt, heralding it for the trace minerals that are found in sea water such as phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen, among others.

 A Scene at the Sea
At heart, A Scene at the Sea is a fable about self-improvement through sheer persistence.
The film's emphasis on seascapes (the very first shot is Shigeru's point of view of the glittering sea through the windshield of the garbage truck) keeps this unassuming human drama in perspective.
Kitano's fixation on the sea, no doubt the future subject of many graduate theses, underscores Shigeru's inevitably doomed attempt to master the waves; the sea here is the conceptual opposite of the stylized urban backdrop in Kids Return.

A Scene at the Sea is a virtually dialogue-free film that opts instead for expression to convey emotion; Kitano's choice of lead actors Kuroudo Maki and Hiroko Oshima serve him well in crafting an introspective film in which emotion is pivotal.
In A SCENE AT THE SEA, the main characters happen to be two young hearing-impaired.
essential kitano, the prototype for those many scenes in sonatine and hanabi where two people are sitting on a beach looking into the camera while a third appears in one corner of the screen and, well, sits down next to them and looks into the camera basically.

 erasing clouds
Though the film's atmosphere is similar to, say, the beach scenes in Sonatine or the vacation scenes in Fireworks, in both of those films there is a constant sense of impending doom and destruction, even when the characters are goofing around.
A Scene At the Sea is similar to Kids Return in how closely it looks at and understands a few individuals and in its understated, unassuming style, though its content is much different.
A Scene At the Sea might not be as accessible to mainstream U.S. audiences as his other films; its subtle, relaxed style is more reminiscent of directors like Satyijat Ray and Wim Wenders than Tarentino or Scorsese.

And one of the most romantic moments in recent cinema can be found during a moment where the two lovers are separated because Shigeru can't bring his surfboard on the bus.

ToxicUniverse.com - Beat Takeshi Kitano - 1992 - Scene at the Sea, A Movies Review
Honestly, A Scene at the Sea is sort of a like a Japanese surf flick—minus Annette Funicello and the corny music (at the very least, it’s a beach film—a setting Takeshi will return to time and again in his films, particularly Sonatine and Fireworks).
While A Scene at the Sea features two deaf lead characters (who never speak a word), this is something that has come to color all of Beat’s films.
This is carried even further in a later scene where the two reunite—again, no dialogue is used at all…there’s no screaming match, no apologies, nothing except for the physical actions of the two actors which let us know that things are once again okay.

These scenes are not overly sappy, well maybe Kikujiro can be at times, and are quite moving.
By folding his clothes on the beach while he is surfing and refusing to sit on the bus when he is unable to board it with his surfboard, Takako displays her affection and care for Shigeru.
Another Kitano film beautifully scored by Hisaishi Joe, A Scene at the Sea might not be for those more interested in Kitano films such as Violent Cop and Boiling Point, but, like Dolls, this is an important film in perceiving the director's overall scope of film.

There's no suggestion that Shigeru's relationship with Takako is fully sexual (the implication is that they are bonded by their disabilities), but Takako is left very much the bereaved lover in the closing scenes.
The film ends with a montage of images from their time together, some previously seen, others not, but the effect is not to provide a sentimental affirmation of their love.
