Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
Those who stick it out encounter the unfortunate adventures of three plucky orphans (played by Emily Browning, Liam Aiken and the infant duo of Kara and Shelby Hoffman), who must cope with the tragic deaths of their parents and then a collection of eccentric relations who take stabs at being their guardians.
Unfortunate, too, is the inability of director Brad Silberling and writer Robert Gordon to turn a literary conceit into a cinematic adventure.
Events are merely strung together rather than allowed to build to a climax.

Ex Libris Book Reviews: A Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemony Snicket
Kids seem to love this book series about the three Baudelaire children - Violet, Klaus, and Sunny - whose parents died tragically in a fire and who spend most of their time trying to evade the evil Count Olaf, a master of disguises who plots to steal the orphan's fortune.
The Series of Unfortunate Events is different from most other children's books in that people die and miserable things are done to the Baudelaires and their friends.
This series is good for kids ages 7-14, but no younger as it is too dark and no older as it may get tiring.

The longest book in the series, it is the one that has the least to say, advancing the plot not one iota, which here means "we're pretty much the same place we started after 353 pages".
An unfortunate accident leads to a Violently Freaky Death, and Justice Strauss calls for a trial, ordering the accused Baudelaires and Count Olaf to be locked in rooms until their case is called.
Unfortunate in this case means, for every person that wins the lottery or finds a penny on the street you can bet that the Baudilaures will have just been tricked by some fellow who tried to steal their inheritence or had their house burn to the ground.

The movie also adds in a subplot that the first three books do not possess, but that the later ones (according to my brother) do, so I was a bit bothered by having that element ruined if i choose to read more of the series.
I, however, understand the difference between books and movies, and think that on the whole they succeeded in keeping the tone and uniqueness of this series.
Carrey as Olaf is wonderful and adds something to a character that seems to be rather dry in the books and the children are believable and easy to sympathize with.

DVD Verdict Review - Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Either way, it's plainly obvious that the Baudelaires' series of unfortunate events have led them to the dank, ominous castle of Count Olaf (Jim Carrey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), an actor who appears to have gained his fashion sense and flair from Liberace, except not in a good way.
Of course, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is not nearly as vulgar or despicable as the aforementioned film, but it does share Bad Santa's dark spirit, with only a few rays of sunshine poking through the looming despair that hangs over the picture like a chloroform cloth coming in for the kill.

It is unfortunate that so much of her inventing energy has been spent rescuing the three Baudelaire children from harm, rahter than, say, producing a helicopter that runs on the power of rubberbands, but that is the way the story goes.

Based upon a series of books for young adults, Unfortunate Events is clearly an aftershock of the Harry Potter phenomenon.
They've taken an unfortunate orphan story that is very "Little Princess", added a Tim Burton-esque look, tossed in some celebrity cameos and pop-culture references for mom and dad, and left an opening for a whole series of sequels, toys, and marketing tie-ins.
Jim Carrey's recent film, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is an unfortunate adaptation of a set of novels pen by Daniel Handler.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
When I first saw the trailer for Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, I had never given much thought to the series of children’s books written by Daniel Handler, a.k.a.
Only the first three of the series were used to make the movie, which was probably the wisest choice, as including further plot segments would likely have made the film a jumbled mess.
As expected, fairly major liberties were taken in turning the books into a movie, but these liberties happily don’t interfere with the charm of Handler’s storytelling, particularly its treatment of children as capable, intelligent individuals who sometimes possess greater knowledge and intuitive ability than do the adults who lord over them.

Unfortunate Events ends up being one of those heartbreaking movies that gets off to a promising start but never quite creaks to life, despite everyone's obvious best efforts.
The 11 published Unfortunate Events books are much-loved because, in many ways, Handler is the legitimate heir to Roald Dahl: He doesn't talk down to his young readers, he's funny, and he understands that great children's stories can survive heaping dollops of dark humor.
As with the Buckaroo Banzai disc from a few years back, Silberling and "Snicket" are pretending that their movie is a sort of docudrama of real-world events.

The film, based on a series of best-selling children's novels, is supposed to be about three orphans who live with a series of guardians, most of them dreadful; but the show belongs, for better or worse, to the hammy, greedy, villainous Count Olaf (Carrey).
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is rated PG for thematic elements, scary situations and brief language.
The children who come into Olaf's care are sure to suffer some "unfortunate events." But audiences and critics seem to think that it all adds up to one rather fortunate event … even if the original plots of the storybooks were altered along the way.
