Gerald Finzi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1922, following five years of study with Bairstow, Finzi moved to Painswick in Gloucestershire, where he began composing in earnest.
His first Hardy settings and the orchestral piece A Severn Rhapsody were soon performed in London to favourable reviews.
In 1925, at the suggestion of Adrian Boult, Finzi took a course in counterpoint with R.

 Gerald Finzi - biographical information
After a private education, including a course in counterpoint from R.O. Morris in 1925, Finzi taught at the Royal Academy of Music from 1930-1933.
Works from this early period include the Severn Rhapsody (1923) and the Violin Concerto (1928).
Following his marriage to the artist Joyce (Joy) Black (1907-1991) in 1933, the Finzis moved for a short time to Aldbourne in Wiltshire before settling at Church Farm in Ashmansworth.

The second Longaville's Sonnet is in very much the same mood while the third soliloquy, Dumaine's Poem has a faster tempo but is equally gentle although strongly melodic.
The Severn Rhapsody is strongly influenced by Vaughan Williams and to a lesser extent, George Butterworth.
Derivative it may be, but it is nonetheless a very pleasant and moving evocation of the English countryside and of the River Severn meandering through it.

We also get an atmospheric account of Lawrence Ashmore’s idiomatic orchestration of the Five Bagatelles (with the poignant “Romance” a highlight), as well as exquisitely drawn renderings of both the Romance for strings and “Three Soliloquies” from Finzi’s incidental music for a 1946 BBC production of Love’s Labour’s Lost.
The fragrant, very early Severn Rhapsody (1923) makes a welcome return to the catalogue under Griffiths’s deeply felt advocacy, and Lesley Hatfield makes a touching soloist in the radiant Introit (the slow movement of a withdrawn Violin Concerto from 1925-7).
Tim Handley’s sound and balance are extremely truthful, though the acoustic may be a little over-resonant for some tastes.

Finzi is a master at creating an atmosphere of romantic reverie and longing for the characters set at the court of the King of Navarre.
As for the remaining works, 'A Severn Rhapsody' is gorgeous miniature that evokes the idyllic English countryside while the Romance in E flat appears to owe its influence to Elgar.
Finally, the Introit in F is a gentle and tender work that was originally intended as the slow movement for a violin concerto that was later abandoned.

The qualities of other, smaller works like the Miniature Suite, the Processional or the St. John's Suite lie in their practical connection: the Processional and the St. John's Suite were composed (as were several choral works) for the use in Cambridge University.
Particularly lie his qualities in the writing for strings, as the Rhapsody on the old English tune Lazarus (1922) shows.
One particular quality Rootham possessed was to write slow movements.

Severn Rhapsody and Introit have little or no competition and both are winsome works from the early years.
