Topic: A Ship to India

Ship prefix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A ship prefix is a combination of letters, usually abbreviations, used in front of the name of a civilian or naval ship.
Today the common practice is to use a single prefix for all warships of a nation's navy, and other prefixes for auxiliaries and ships of allied services, such as coast guards.
The use of ship prefixes is not universal; in particular neither the Third Reich's Kriegsmarine nor the Imperial Japanese Navy used ship prefixes.

 Ship 'too dangerous' for India
New Delhi - India's supreme court banned an asbestos-laden French warship on Monday from entering the country's waters before February 13, when a ruling is due on whether it can be scrapped there, said lawyers.
The watchdog group says most sea-going ships end their service at ship breaking yards in India, Bangladesh, China and Pakistan, where they are cut up by unprotected workers, taking a grim toll on human health and the environment.
The Egyptian government had accepted the French argument that the ship was still government property rather than scrap and that the aircraft carrier therefore did not fall under the Basel Convention.

CHIRAC RECALLS ASBESTOS-LADEN SHIP FROM INDIA, ORDERS INQUIRY
Environmental groups, which had lobbied against sending the ship to India on the grounds that Indian shipbreakers lack the safety equipment necessary to deal with cancer-causing asbestos, hailed the decision as a victory for efforts to halt the export of hazardous wastes to developing countries, as well as for Indian workers.
The ship was halted en route to India in January, after an Indian Supreme Court committee made an interim report recommending that the ship not be allowed to enter Indian waters.
It also suggested that the transfer of the ship to India violated the Basel Convention's stipulation forbidding signatories to undertake transboundary shipments of hazardous waste without assurances that the destination facility meets its definition of environmentally sound management.

India is becoming a dumping ground for the toxic garbage of the West which finds it too harmful to handle, too polluting to retain, and too expensive to clean up.
The ship is owned by the French government (till the demolition is complete) which, being the actual signatory to the Basel Convention, should have taken the lead in enforcing it but is itself not only flouting its international obligations but also engaging in various subterfuges to circumvent them.
France sold the ship to SDIC which was to remove all hazardous materials including all visible and accessible asbestos without, of course, affecting the ship’s "structural integrity", that is, its ability to float to its destination.

All ships containing toxic waste should be cleaned at their site of origin, providing adequate health and safety technologies are available locally, before being sent anywhere for shipbreaking, and particularly before being sent to developing countries.
