There are more reliable accounts of the "destruction of the West Indies", including some by Las Casas.
Las Casas' account is not only detailed, it is a horific and terrifying tale of the conquest and subjugation of a lovable, tractable, peaceable, gentle, decorous people.
"Short Account Destruction W Indies" is a must-read for those historians suffering from the same amnesia-like affliction as David Irving: that the wholesale slaughter of the Native population of the Western Hemisphere is somehow a historical untruth and is somehow not borne out by the historical facts.

After reading the horrific accounts of what has occurred to those “unassuming, long suffering, unassertive and submissive” peoples of the Indies that “are with out without malice or guile, and are utterly faithful and obedient both to their own native lords and to the Spainards in whose service they now find themselves” (Las Casas, 10).
As a god-fearing man of the priesthood, I utterly deplore the use of my Christian faith as a ruse of the Spaniards in the Indies to justify their agenda of greed and destruction.
In belief that with their support our Prince Phillip will find a means to regulate the activities in the Americas and put an end to the hardships of her natives and possibly unearth a way to avenge the use of his good name, country and faith for such a merciless show of power.

Mexico - Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies and doctrinal treatises of Friar Bartolomé de las Casas: UNESCO-CI Mexico - Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies and doctrinal treatises of Friar Bartolomé de las Casas
The Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias (Short account of the destruction of the Indies) and other doctrinal treatises written by Friar Bartolomé de las Casas, and published in Seville between January 1552 and January 1553, were the only works by this author published during his lifetime.
The reason for their publication was to inform a wider public, not just the authorities of the Spanish Crown, of the “atrocities” being committed by the conquistadors and settlers in America.

He wrote A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies in 1542, a shocking catalogue of mass slaughter, torture and slavery, which showed that the evangelizing vision of Columbus had descended under later conquistadors into genocide.
Dedicated to Philip II to alert the Castilian Crown to these atrocities and demand that the Indians be entitled to the basic rights of humankind, this passionate work of documentary vividness outraged Europe and contributed to the idea of the Spanish ‘Black Legend’ that would last for centuries.

Term paper on Latin America: Relacion by Las casas:"A short account of the destruction of the Indies
Perhaps the most profound method used by the enemies of Spain was the written work of Les Casas, titled, "Brevissima relacion de Las destruccion de Las Indias", which provides a comprehensive and detailed account of the scale of genocide and list of cruelties meted out against the Indian populations on this part of the world.
These written accounts were captured by the enemies of Spain, and propagated to provide evidence about the actual and true state of affairs under the Spanish rule in the region under discussion.
Yet, one of the most profound and realistic revelations as uncovered by Les Casas and rightly used by the enemies of Spain to claim their right on the New World were detailed studies on the Indian populations.

Brief sequences give a watered-down account that hardly does justice to the crimes committed during this era.
In the film all of the sexual exploitation and forced domestic servitude of this era are briefly glazed over in one short scene (tape one: 1:39:15).

Literature of Resistance can be traced back to Bartolome de Las Casas’ A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies, but it is in the past thirty years that the genres of Testimony and the Political Novel have gained acceptance and a large following.
For the most part this literature is written by those on the margins of society: women, guerrilla fighters, ethnic groups, gays, but also traditional novelists have used the form, such as Isabel Allende and Gabriel García Márquez.
Class lectures will focus on historical, theoretical and literary contexts of the works read and will expand on the role of literature as a weapon that reshapes society at the same time that it creates new art forms.
