When we were in the service in Spain, there were instructions from the military as to how not to be "the ugly American." I found that showing interest in the people, at least to try to speak their language, was much appreciated.
If I were a soldier I would be more concerned about finding bombs and bad guys than remembering to pat my heart or forehead when I see someone.
This soldiers insight to the whole Iraq situation is very moving and enlightening.

Day to Day, August 24, 2004 · Military officials are cracking down on blogs written by soldiers and Marines in Iraq, saying some of them reveal sensitive information.
Paul Hastings, a spokesman for unit CBFTW belongs to, said the soldier's blog now has to be reviewed by his platoon sergeant and a superior officer.
In an e-mail to NPR, Hastings said the popularity of blogging has increased the chance that soldiers may inadvertently give away information to Internet-savvy enemies.
