Inhuman but humanoid "Others" from the north are moving towards the ice Wall that protects the kingdom of Westeros, but the kingdom has fragmented as different claimants to the throne compete and no one has time to listen to warnings about threats known only from old stories...
And, world-building concerns aside, A Song of Ice and Fire is a rattling good yarn, with a complex interwoven plot sporting some elements of mystery and plenty of surprises.
Many of the characters are shaped by confusions over their sexuality and sex plays a central role in the plot: one young king marries unwisely, bringing ruin upon his family; another is a misogynistic sadist; an otherwise calculating schemer nurses a passion from his youth; and so forth.

What would be even greater would be a mod to give the world you play in a real story and atmosphere with factions, quests plots and so on.
My suggestion for this would be to use the world of fantasy author George R R Martin's 'Westeros'; (or Seven Kingdoms) which is the setting of the book series called A Song of Ice and Fire.

Like Zan and I said, the fantasy elements come in slowly and are written in a way that makes them all seem so "natural." It's not your regular sword and sorcery tale by any stretch of the imagination.
And from what I hear, it's also more "realistic" or has more of an historical/political feel than either Jordan or Goodkind -- both of whom's series the Song of Ice and Fire is somehow compared to.
