It was a network TV special that aired on CBS the same year Christmas Eve on Sesame Street debuted.
Where as Christmas Eve on Sesame Street became a classic and was played every year (for a while), A Special Sesame Street Christmas never aired again.
PBS doesn't own the rights to Sesame Street even though it is broadcast on that channel.

PBS used to air it every Christmas morning and then when i was older I purchased the video...when I first saw the DVD, I HAD TO HAVE IT.
Sesame Street is a great show, no matter how old you are.
It does funny (any scene involving cookie monster), heart-warming (the huggums), and vitriol (old Oscar is the ultimate incarnation of the sort of street punk that you'd love to give a hard kicking to).

Oscar was sort of extra grouchy, then again he was no Mother Thresa in "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street" either.
Maybe he posted it so that people who want to see it can see it for free, hate it, and then if it ever comes to DVD sales would be bad because people saw it on You Tube and hated it.
Part of it may be simply an appreciation for this special being from what I think of as the near-end of Sesame Street 1.0---to me it's the old show's last hurrah.
