  Danny Fisher
A Stone For Danny Fisher is a very serious, early novel by Harold Robbins that looks at the effect of the Great Depression on a lower-middle class Jewish family.
The novel opens in the mid-1920's as a young Danny Fisher and his family move in to a new house in the Brooklyn suburbs.
Danny's boxing skills attract the attention of the local hoodlums and he is offered a large sum of money to throw the 'Golden Gloves' championship - a fight he could win easily and would bring him professional fame as well as, it is hoped, his father's acceptance.

A Stone for Danny Fisher by Harold Robbins
A Stone for Danny Fisher is the story of a young man who did not start at the bottom.
Born into a family of modest means and respectability, Danny Fisher was gradually driven downward into the world of crime, racketeering and poverty.
Danny was a boxer - a sensational amateur and potential champion - and he might have gone straight had the fight promoters not tried to exert pressure.

A Stone For Danny Fisher is his best book ever in my opinion : had he never written another book, this alone would have made him an author to remember.
Danny Fisher narrates his own story in the first person, starting with a short, stark depiction of his family meeting at a pre-arranged place and then cutting to flashback mode to explain why.
Danny is an anti-hero here, but rarely a villain, so sympathetically and starkly are his story and dilemmas painted.

On the rear sleeve were three fl and white stills from the film, There was also a synopsis of the film on the back sleeve, which made reference to the fact that the film was based on Harold Robins' A Stone For Danny Fisher.
The reason for this, it has been suggested, was that first pressings of the sleeve included as one of the tracks Danny!, if this is so, then no doubt when the editing was done the song cut from the film, the sleeves (probably prepared months in advance) would have had to be altered.
In all fairness, it is most unlikely that the panel was stuck on to hide reference to Danny - a number of albums were produced this was during the '50s.

Working as a busboy in a local cabaret, the impulsive Danny is soon drawn into a gangster underworld as two club owners, Maxie Fields (Walter Matthau) and Charlie LeGrand (Paul Stewart), vie for his talents as a rising young singer.
While trying to do the right thing, and avoid a group of small-time hoods lead by Shark (Vic Morrow), Fisher also is drawn between two women — young, innocent Nellie (Dolores Hart), and former nightclub singer Ronnie (Carolyn Jones), who is under Maxie's thumb.
