 A Taxing Woman Movie Review
ATW carries on the tradition established in his first two films, that is, to take a mundane subject and spin a narrative around it in an unconventional manner.
Taxes in Japan are high, with some marginal tax rates approaching 80%, and as a result, there is a lot of tax evasion.
A woman hides a safety deposit key in her bra, and when the overzealous JRS agents demand to stripsearch her, she removes all her clothing and lies on a bed, crying out "Women have another hiding place.

The tax system manipulates people's economic behavior in a way reminiscent of the Vietnam War draft system, except the draft people made no secret of their "channeling" process.
Anyhow, I don't care about Theresa's taxes, and what the Republicans really were after were here charitable deductions, because it is believed that she is a powerful political player through contributions to the far left, and that would be a "talking point."

Yamazaki, the truck driver of "Tampopo," is wickedly funny as a gimpy millionaire who is being investigated by the tax police.
Nobuko Miyamoto, his "Tampopo" costar, is his charming nemesis as the tenacious inspector Ryoko Itakura, whose recent promotion has transformed her from a career bureaucrat into a kewpie Columbo.
Miyamoto is a delightful performer, but unhappily she has a one-note, no-growth role as Ryoko, who's as bent on collecting taxes as Gondo is on dodging them.

FILM FESTIVAL; 'TAXING WOMAN,' FROM JAPAN - New York Times
At the center of ''A Taxing Woman'' is Ryoko Itakura (Nobuko Miyamoto), who, after her divorce, has gone to work in the Japanese equivalent of the Internal Revenue Service to support herself and her 5-year-old son.
A seemingly ordinary middle-class woman who wears her hair in a Louise Brooks bob and is self-conscious about her freckles, Ryoko suddenly finds her true calling as a tax inspector.
During the initial phases of the tax inquiry, Ryoko and Gondo are drawn to each other in a wacky variation on the sentimental movie about the cop who falls for the criminal.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: A Taxing Woman's Return | Deseret Morning News Web edition
It should be said up front, however, that "A Taxing Woman's Return" is quite different from its predecessor in that the emphasis is less on comedy as the film unfolds more like a hard-edged cop thriller.
Again directed by Juzo Itami ("Tampopo") and starring his wife Noboku Miyamoto as the zealous tax inspector, "A Taxing Woman's Return" has her uncovering a much bigger fish than the adult motel business that was the central figure in the original film.
Different, but highly entertaining, "A Taxing Woman's Return" is also a bit more raunchy than the first film and, though unrated, would doubtless receive an R for violence, sex, nudity and profanity, all treated with the typical casual abandon of the Japanese cinema at large.

Itami stages many scenes in confined spaces: the tax offices, choked with cigarette smoke and the chattering of agents working the phones; the villain's cluttered house, with secret compartments and rooms to conceal his activities; and the hotel rooms, with their crumpled sheets and messy bathrooms.
The taxing woman of the title is Nobuko Miyamoto (the wife of director Juzo Itami), who works for the Japanese version of the IRS.
She is also "taxing" in her insistence upon upholding the letter of the law and doggedly tracking down tax cheats.

If a plot spanning religion, taxes, corporate finance, bribery, and politics seems too fantastic to be believed, one only need remember that the recent Recruit bribery scandal was so pervasive that it toppled the administration of Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita.
Because A Taxing Woman 2 does much to fulfill and build on the promise of that earlier film, Itami is now well on his way to securing his reputation as a major figure of Japanese cinema.

All of this should work like clockwork, and sometimes it does, but I found "A Taxing Woman" a disappointment after the lean economy of "Tampopo." The movie sometimes seems shapeless, overlong and meandering, and there are stretches when nothing much seems to happen.
The tax system in Japan will seem familiar to any American viewer, and so will the actions of the gangster and the "taxing woman." But I was baffled, and intrigued, by the ways that accounting procedures seemed to function as a metaphor for sexuality.

In A Taxing Woman his subjects are relentless greed and implacable righteousness, and his mood is, appropriately, much darker.
In A Taxing Woman, where the subject is money, these outbursts are more shocking than risible, especially when Ryoko's revenue-agent colleagues eventually stage a mass raid on Gondo's home and demonstrate they are every bit as mad in their pursuit of justice as he is in defense of miserliness.

Juzo Itami - Films as Director and Scriptwriter:, Films as Actor:
One might single out as an example the disturbing interplay of conflicting responses generated by the scene where the son-in-law has sex in the bushes with his mistress while his wife (the dead man's daughter), fully aware of what is going on, quietly distracts herself on a swing.
Yet the parallel is strong: in both cases the woman becomes committed not simply to the solution of a specific "case" but to the exposure of the corruption and inherent criminality of the patriarchal-capitalist power structure.
The fact that the "taxing woman" (Itami's wife Nobuko Miyamoto) works for the government prohibits—for all the force of her personal crusade against corporate corruption—the raising of a key question: To what ends are taxes actually used within a capitalist state?

''A Taxing Woman's Return'' is a sequel, but it's a very different kind of movie from the first, which introduced the ''taxing woman,'' Ryoko (Nobuko Miyamoto), the former housewife who, after one setback and another, finds self-realization as a tax inspector.
In the new film, Ryoko is a fully formed character, one who functions much in the way of the lead of a television series.
''A Taxing Woman's Return'' is about Ryoko's further adventures, this time with Mishima (Toru Masuoka), a callow young Tokyo University graduate, as her partner.
